Not sure where else to post this question and i don;t suspect there are many here who use piccolo strings, but here goes:
I use D'Addario piccolo strings (EXL280 XL: 20p - 32 - 42 - 52) on my Roland GK PUP equipped Carvin bass to improve the tracking/latency of my midi setup, since standard bass strings always historically track poorly with pitch to midi setups in the lower frequencies. I generally love the sound of the strings, however, I wish the G string were roundwound instead of nickel plated as it does feel different. Looking at other piccolo string options out there from Warwick, GHS, and Ken Smith, it seems that this is generally how it's done, as nobody seems to make a roundwound string around the .20 gauge range. I thought I would experiment with using guitar strings instead, but I couldn't get the strings to tune up to 440 standard G without breaking, since the tension was too great. Since I am stringing a 35" scale instrument, however, I have to wonder if it would work with a short scale bass.
At any rate, I'm still hoping there's some solution out there. Any suggestions, or am I looking for something that simply isn't possible? Worse comes to worse, I could just live with the .20p G string or consider moving my midi setup to a short scale bass instead, but I much prefer playing on the Carvin.
