Don't know about you guys, but I love Kai Eckhardt. If I had the chance to come back to life as another bassist, I'd definitely like to be Kai. He has some cheesy songs here and there (mainly the ones where he sings) but I really like his voicing and note choice, and techniques, of course. He's not your typical slapper, fretless player and/or jazz bassist. Really unique. Been a fan for many years.

Here's his most recent album:

Paul McCartney. He can hit something as seemingly simple as a whole note in a way that I've never been able to replicate! His bass parts (writing) and actual playing is magically beautiful!

Jerry Jemmott. The most "in the pocket " player EVER. Saw him with BB King twice. Every note he played was the "right" note. Young players could learn alot about tasteful note/groove selection from his playing. The best example I've ever seen of understated playing and playing for the song. Besides his great bass talent he is a wonderful, thoughtful human being. I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with him at a showcase gig we did in NYC in the late eighties (He was there to see his friend the late blues singer Frankie Paris) What a gentleman. http://jerryjemmott.com/

I would probably just save myself three halves of a decade and start on the bass instead of the guitar.

Tonight (it changes a lot)....

JPJones

there's the Zep thang plus there's his consummate musicianship (as I see it)

Seems truly, genuinely motivated by the song.

What else is there to say?

Love Paul

Geezer

the dude from Blues Traveler in NOLA

and several more

like...

Mr. PC Paul Chambers (on a string bass)

those first notes that kick in on So What are quintessential

There's a lot and that's a good thing
