I didn't go but was very close to going. Although, now, after seeing the clinics online (they are up on YouTube), I'm kinda glad I didn't go. It doesn't seem that the BP moderators put a lot of thought on the content of these clinics and they leave it up to the guests to come up with topics. Some guys are naturally great, but others are awkwardly bad or unprepared -- so it becomes a very expensive hang (for those of us far from LA, or course). I used to go to Bass Player Live every year when it was in NYC, but I haven't been to the ones in LA yet. I think I'm getting old, because I just don't see the value and fun I used to see in this event.

How was it for you?

Thanks for asking!

I am not going to LA to go for it from DC. Not worth it. Maybe if in NYC I would go up for it. It was worth it because I was already in LA for work. I learned a good amount from the Latin bass playing clinic. The clinic Laboriel did was really good, I thought. The product demo....great playing, not a lot of teaching.

Really, really enjoyed meeting Abraham Laboriel, a true gentleman and humble spirit. I also met Norm Stockton and he was absolutely wonderful, and very helpful. Not a single lefty bass in the room, but it was great to try out a lot of products.

The Aguilar room was really good, and had cool stuff and awesome informal hangs with Marcus Miller, and come crazy guy on upright who did unreal stuff with the upright bow and using effects. The exhibition hall, even though was super loud, really helped me hone down on some products I had been thinking about that my local bass store Jive Sound had. I came away with a strong sense of what effects to get overall.

The conditions in LA were really crowded. The location was not the best in the world. It was pretty uncomfortable and they did not have enough chairs for the clinics, or space in the studios. It was cool to go, especially for my first time as a non-music professional who just likes to play bass, but not something on my list to do every year. I'll save my pennies and go to the Victor Wooten camp, or since I go to Boston all the time maybe do a 3 day workshop at Berklee. My playing needs the help, and I agree that teaching was inconsistent.

Cool!

I really miss the NYC Bass Day. . . I guess because that was pre-YouTube days, so the only way to get to see all those guys in one day was by going to the event, but now you can see the videos. . .

Like you said, it's cool if you are in town already or close, but it was going to cost me about $1000 for the whole trip (between plane ticket, lodging and food). . .
