As usual there were a dearth of lefty anything. However, Carvin brought a very sweet Icon 5 neck thru. Flamey maple top, walnut body, all kinds of options like a piezo pup, active and passive modes, Birdseye maple board. Out the door price of $1798. Sounded grat thru their B series amp using the 4X10 on hand. The only thing that disappointed me was the finish on the back of the neck. IMO they laid on the poly way too thick of for my tastes. I suppose some fine grit sandpaper and some TLC could rectify this, but hey, maybe that's standard for Carvin. I do believe it'll be on their website by Monday if it's not already there. I'll have pics of it up Monday. |

Thanks for the report AZ. That bass was on the Carvin Forum - they had it for sale at the showroom in San Diego. I pm'ed the mod on that forum and he said that you could only buy it in person at the store in San Diego. They do offer satin finish, but when you order one of their neck-through basses if you get say a gloss finish on the body you have to pay more to get satin on the back of the neck. I thought that looked really nice and it's cool to hear it does in person too. Do you happen to know which pickups it has? They looked like they were radiused, which would make them either the single coil or radiused humbuckers that come on the Bromberg bass. Here's a link to the slide show from this year's jaunt. As always, there was a dearth of lefties. I photographed most of the ones that I found, which weren't a heck of a lot. Sorry to be so terse, but the NAMM hangover is still upon me. Nice! Though at risk of stating the obvious, where are the instruments?  I've been reading great things about Warm Audio stuff, particularly their half rack mic preamp. Maybe it's just me, but based on the new product press releases and photos I've seen from NAMM this year, there didn't seem to be much to get too excited about. (How many different ways can Fender reinvent the Strat now?). I tend to gravitate towards innovative stuff and/or Hall E. I guess it's cool that Gibson's got a ton of new lefty stuff in 2014 (though that $500 mark up on the T-Bird still urks me.  ). I see Roland's got a new A/V mixing console for producing better live music videos, which I could use, but at over $2000 I'll stick with my laptop. Now THIS is right up my alley. But of course, there are no lefty-specific versions. There was a LOT of the same-old-same-old instruments from last year. Literally the exact same instruments. Also my personal focus was on recording and PA stuff and some specific pedals and Plug-ins this year. If LB members want to pool their resources and commision me as an instrument photographer, I'll be glad to shift my focus next year  Lastly, I spent a lot of quality time at most of the booths I visited this year instead of trying to take it all in. I never got to Trussart, Orange, Martin, PRS, Spector and a boatload of others. Oh well ..... |
