Never knew these existed, although I'm sure the Fender aficionados here know of this... did they make any lefty models?

I completely forgot about those. They've become nearly impossible to find. I've never seen a lefty. It's my understanding these were the first 5 string basses ever put into production. Strung E-A-D-G-C, so the low B concept was decades away. And only 15 frets! Supposedly John Paul Jones used one on some early Zeppelin recordings, but I couldn't tell you which ones.

Interesting it was 34" scale, yet only 15 frets... I wonder what the reasoning was behind that. Anyone care to hazard a guess?

I've always liked the look of these.

It was "marketed" towards studio players who do a lot of sight-reading, it allowed them to play across the neck instead of up, so they used less hand position changes. Same number of notes as a P or J.
Seen a pic of JPJ playing one live, and Jamerson owned one.
