Howdy Y'all,

My band - White Cowbell Oklahoma - is heading out on tour in the EU again at the end of the month. We're doing a special deluxe double vinyl EU edition of our most recent record as well. (180g virgin coloured vinyl, half speed remastered, bonus tracks, yadda yadda.) To commemorate the pressing we did this little video on a Sunday afternoon.

It's really quite amazing what you can accomplish with a couple of GoPro cameras, a green screen, a buddy's apartment in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto and about two quarts of tequila. There is an especially magical moment at around 2:39 that shows my bass tossing/catching skills - and bare chest (sorry) - at their finest.

BEHOLD! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLyEHBFwEAE

Cheers!

 Great video, and Rockin' song! Posted this on my Facebook page so you can be seen in all of your bare-chested glory!

By the way, is the SG you're playing standard scale, or is it the 30" version?

It's a 30" scale. It's one of the brand new ones that Gibson just did at the end of 2012. It was one of the faded cherry models when I bought it but after some refinishing/relic'ing/Hipshot-a-fying it became the beauty you see now. It's super fun to play. I just have to remember to not bend the strings as far as I usually do with a 34" bass. Also, it almost fits in a regular guitar gig bag. (I just put a toque - or as you Yankees call it, a wool cap - on the headstock and bring it as carry on for easy flying. Boosh!)

Thanks for the props!

Jayce- I have a friend that plays a right hand version of yours in a band, and I'm impressed by how "Phat" it sounds! Sounds like a great choice for travelling. Now if they just made a 5-string model..... :)

I know well the "phatness" that you speak of. I think it has something to do with that neck pickup. Plus, I use slightly heavier strings on the E and A than on my other basses. Through a tube amp, it is pure glory. (Although - not too surprisingly - through my Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 it is just kinda.... meh. Conversely, my Modulus 5 string sounds "meh" through my Fender Super Bassman 300 but frickin' awesome through my Aguilar. Go figure....)

Thanks again. I'll be sure to share all of my chest baring moments. (....no....wait. Scratch that....)

HAHAHA!!

Yes, dude!!!

That was absolutely killer... and your bass tone is bad ass!

The fact that you have a guy that just plays cowbell is already pretty epic, but the bass toss with the buttons popping on the shirt was almost biblical.

Very cool!

Haha! Thanks again guys.

We are in fact from Toronto. (Or at least we all live in Toronto now....)

Also, thanks on the tone props! All I can say is, Fender Super Bassman 300 and Rickenbacker on that one.

And, for the record, Charlie doesn't just play the cowbell. He is also the pyrotechnic and chainsaw engineer. Not to mention the intense work he does as the burlesque dancer wrangler and Jagermeister delivery technician. Plus, his day job is as an actor. So when we roll into a gig, load in and are all doing soundcheck, he's shmoozing with the venue staff and figuring out how we're going to walk away with the most amount of complimentary beverages. Calling him a "musician" would definitely be a stretch but boy is he ever a musician's best friend. I would classify him as a "showman". Definitely worth the travel expenses and per diem in my opinion!

:D

It's official. I know nothing about what it takes to be a professional musician anymore.

I have a few problems with this video and song:

1. Not enough cowbell. Although I see the dude banging on it the whole time, I couldn't hear it. What's up with that. . .
2. Bass tossing: Not cool. It makes me nervous, and you're kinda showing off. . . "Hey, look, I have two basses, and no hair on my chest." Kinda vulgar, the whole thing.
3. There is a breakdown section where the drummer is banging on his little snare drum with only one hand, but it clearly sounds like he was doing flams with both hands - kinda impossible to achieve with only one hand. Do you guys think we don't know you where not really playing? Why pretend that you are playing when it's clear that what we are hearing is a recording? Ugh. And I saw no amps or cables.
4. There's a section where one of the guys is playing in the middle of fire. How's that possible?

So many discrepancies and impossibilities that I'm having a hard believing the whole thing. Lastly, you look weird playing left-handed. Couldn't you just learn to play right-handed? It makes so much more sense.

There is someone sitting next to me at a coffee shop right now who thinks I'm an insane person because I just burst out laughing - hard - as I read this. Thank you. I needed some levity today. This forum is awesome. :!:

I will respond to at least one of the issues you bring up though. I do in fact have hair on my chest. I'm just firmly planted in my Carlsberg years and it is - for the most part - grey and doesn't show up in this video format very well. Your comment is appreciated. I will be sure to dye my chest hair for the next time I bare myself for a camera.

:D
