Bizarre, but considering how many of us got royally f*cked after Hurricane Sandy it's not such a strange idea. They carry the Champion brand right now, which gives you up to 7500w running watts if need for $899. They also have a 3500w for $425 and a 2000w power inverter for $799 (I considered buying the 7500w from Costco after the hurricane). I already bit the bullet and bought a Westinghouse one in January, but should we ever encounter another potential situation like Sandy, Irene, etc again and you find yourself doing the mad scramble in the 11th hour to find anyone who still has generators in stock (like I did) you might want to keep MF in mind. My thought being fewer people would consider ordering from a music retailer than Home Depot, Sears, etc., and they're always running their 15% off deals so not only could you get it at a decent price but the cost difference between other retailers could be thrown towards shipping quicker. Just a thought. |

It does makes sense from a music point of view considering how many small outdoor gigs people have been doing lately. |

Oddly enough, I have heard of a few of studios who use gas generators. For the life of me I don't remember if it has something to do with noise, or just a more controled method of the voltage input. |

Having worked for Honda back in the '90's, and sold their generators, I can see where studios might run on generators for a constant 110-volt output, especially if they're in an area that has "brown-outs on a consistant basis. Here In Hawaii, we will occasionally have "rolling" brown-outs, which plays havoc with computers etc. The thing to be aware of when purchasing a generator for computer and studio use though, is to make sure the generator doesn't put out a "square" sine wave... cheap generators will, as they're designed primarily to run refrigerators, heaters, and house circuits and lights. High-end generators, like Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and etc, have a much better designed A/C dynamo, which puts out a more typical "round" wave, and that's why they typically cost three-to-four times as much as the generators you can buy at Home Depot, Costco etc.... A typical cheap generator, for example a 3500-watt product, will cost about $350-or-so, whereas the same wattage generator by Honda, will set you back $2000 or more... BUT, a well-made generator will always start when you need it, is quiet and reliable, and puts out the type of electrical current that is friendly to ALL of your appliances and gadgets... This is probably WAY more info than y'all wanted on this subject... Bill, maybe by now, you probably wished you HAD been a thread killer!

After coming home a couple of years ago from a lovely dinner with my wife to find my basses floating around in the basement, I'm all about prevention these days. Just an FYI, for anybody who cares, they also make propane generators too, so you can simply hook up your a tank from your gas grill to it. Furthermore, you can buy a gas generator (the easiest and most common generators) and then buy a converter kit for it to run either gas, propane or even natural gas via your home's gas line, so you don't find yourself running out to the gas station every 5 hours to refill your container. My plan at the very least, is to install an inverter switch near my circuit breaker so the generator can simply plug straight into my home and run specified circuits when needed, rather than have extension cords running all over my house. At the very least, IMO EVERYONE should own a power inverter. I've seen them run up to 5000w, but I own a little 750w one and you can grab one for under $100. You can either run it off a spare cold battery (marine battery recommended) or right from your running car. This little baby saved my sanity during the last storm, as it was enough juice to run a couple of lamps, laptops, etc. |
