How many times have we seen the banner "Best Bass Solo Ever" on youtube? Was Googling Philip Kubicki to verify his age, and came across this video of Stu Hamm playing a Kubicki- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnq3ZW6OyTI - and yes, it's a fine solo. But best bass solo ever? Hardly... he's been doing variations of these themes for years. And, there are a lot of videos on youtube saying the same thing, and showing some very talented bass players. But, let's be honest, best "bass solo" posted at the moment? Maybe so... best "bass solo" of the day? Maybe so.... But, I must admit, it does make me click on the video to listen, and hoping it is... and isn't that the goal of a great marketing phrase or slogan, to get you to click on the link? In that case, success; I clicked, because I'm still looking for "The Best Bass Solo Ever" that I can post and stand behind, and say, "this is it"!

But not yet...

Well... Forkplus1, the YouTube user who posted that video, thinks it's the greatest bass solo ever, and that's ok by me. It doesn't mean that you have to agree with him.

It's part of the charm of YouTube.

BTW, since we are in the topic, I have to say that the best bass solos of current bassists have to be those by Victor Wooten. They never get old to me. He knows how to mix melody and pyrotechnics, and has such command of the instrument and the audience. Every time I see him live he blows my mind. It's not easy to construct a good solo, and know know how to pace yourself, and Victor is a master of that. And don't care how many people have mastered the double-thumb technique, nobody funks it up like Victa.

I think that "the best" labeling is part of the YouTube culture. A lot of people do that (the best fails, the best race, etc. . . ) just to get clicks, and a lot of users know it, too. But of course, there is also the ones that really think something is "the best."
