I hope some of you guys get a kick out of this. . . http://youtu.be/z-1a1_Eg9Ik?t=3m34s Long story short, my band had Doug Wimbish and trombonist Big Sam (from NOLA) as guests a few weeks ago. Needless to say, it was a lot of fun. Doug is the nicest guy and we are planning on doing more dates together in the future. We should have some better video from this night coming out soon. I sat in with his band and he sat in with us for a whole set. I was trying to do a duet solo, but he was too much into his solo and didn't see me implying it. . . |

Big time thumbs up! So how the hell is Doug getting those sounds? Digitech Whammy? Did you happen to see what was on his pedal board? |

I have to say I'm not much of pedal geek (used to be when I played guitard) so I didn't pay much attention to the huge pedal board. But I can tell you he had one or two overdrives, a wah, a Whammy, a volume pedal, a Line6 green delay, a Boss sample delay (they one he was playing with on the floor - changing the tempo to speed up the sample and pitch) and he had a new Zoom B3, to which he contributed some presets. I just bought one myself. I've been using an EBS compressor, envelop filter and octave here and there once in a while - the Zoom sounds pretty good - the SVT simulation is especially nice. As far as basses, he had that 5-string you see in the video, his old original Spector 4-string (beat to hell) an Industrial Radio Midi bass, which I didn't see him used the whole weekend, and one other one I can't remember what it was. Trace Elliot shipped him a brand-new head and cabs (oh, the beauty of endorsements). I played thought his rig the day before and I wasn't impressed, although it sounded glorious with his bass. The Spector sound incredible, and in general you can tell Doug has been crafting his sound to perfection for many years. That solo he did there wasn't the best of the night for sure, there were many better moments. You can tell he's not a jazz musician - it's all pentatonics, rock and funk (just like me. . .), but his timing and creativity is so good, and his slapping technique is crazy. And his showmanship is superb as well. He jumped off the stage at a point (had a wireless) and worked the crowd like a true rock star. That's all. We might be doing the New Orleans Jazz Fest with him, and the Wimbash in NY later in the year (Wimbash is a mini festival he organizes). |

That was great! LOVE fx pedals - the more the merrier. I'm surprised more bassists don't make as much use of them as guitarists - electricity is electricity after all. |

wow I must say I haven't been the biggest Wimbish fan, but what he does here, while reaching way beyond the realm of what's considered traditional bass, is very musical and cool. Great playing yourself man and congrats on getting to experience such an amazing gig |
