Bought Funky 42’s MTD Z. Love how light it is, but would like to get a deeper tone.
Any suggestions on strings.

Thanks
JK

+1. I have DR Hi Beams on my deluxe jazz and think they sound great, and definitely will get a deep tone. In fact, my bass is at the shop right now getting set up, getting the pickguard changed to a tort guard, and having a new set of HI Beams thrown on there as I write this.

excelent suggestions on the strings I agree 100% The Z series to my ears with stock electronics and pickups are just thin sounding though. May I suggest upgrading them as well. I had a 6 string model and it was thin sounding to me as well no matter what strings I put on. they well made and play great for an import but with a some new pups and pre and that bass will scream..

The DR's are looking. If that's not deep enough, I'll look into pickups.

Thumbslam, do you remember which pups you used?

I bought it brand new and sold before I did anything I'm not a fan of the zero fret. I like an open string to sound different than a fretted note but that's just a personal thing.

I'm 99% sure you can fit with Nordstrand or Bartolini. Watch Talkbass or eBay for used pickups you can find good deals. I wouldn't replace pickups with replacing the preamp there is no point. Get measurements and read up on Bartolini specs. I have been doing jobs with Seymour Duncan pickups and preamps and been super happy and they have the best customer service anywhere.

One more note if you want deep thick throaty tone I would suggest DR Sunbeams. The steel string might be too bright and over emphasize the clickity clackity treble. I have only used them once and they were the best nickel strings I ever heard and Addison loves them and also the coated Black Beauty DR's

Wow, cool. Wish I could afford to do that!

Wish I could afford a Rick! I just got my set up done by a guy near me named the Wooden Wizard, his work was incredible, and my kid had a good time watching him work in the shop as well.
