just had a call with a coworker in NJ ... her neighborhood is without power, and they received notification this morning that they will receive word by 8:00P this coming Sun as to when they can anticipate power being restored

My sincerest best wishes and prayers for all of you who were in the line of fire, and hopefully your lives were not severely uprooted. The Hurricane passed through our area Saturday night/Sunday morning-afternoon. Saturday night was the worst for us, as the hurricane was preceded by heavy rains and I found myself Shop-Vacing through the entire night to keep the water from flooding my basement. Sump pump was filling up and draining every minute. We were very lucky in that others around us got major flooded property, and also our town had electricity through the entire event while others a block away are still without electricity. I don't know what I would have done if we'd lost power, as my Shop-Vac and sump pump are both powered electrically. I had bought a 750w power inverter and backup car battery in the event I'd need them to at least keep the sump pump going, but I honestly don't know how long the battery would have lasted anyway. I learned from my flood last year to get all my stuff off the floors and out of the room, so all in all our damage was minimal. |

PJ, glad to hear all is well. I can just imagine how badly it would have sucked to have been flooded out twice in one year. Hopefully no-one else on LB took a hit from Irene. |

Our basement got flooded and we just got power back but i'am just glad everything's fine

I also have the same sentiments as PJ, to all those who will see this when their lives are back in operation, my heart goes out to you all. I'm in Pittsburgh, just too far away to be affected by Irene, but many of our customers out there are gonna be closed all week due to flooding or no power. Last time our city was paralyzed was when we got 3feet of snow in 2 days that killed our power for 3 days after that until the trucks could go out on the roads again. I have a gas generator, anda 5 gallon can always filled a day or so before a weather event would happen, but it is not strong enough to pwer anything more than my refrig and some lights..if this would happen in the summer at 90+ degrees, I would just be SOL and sweating because there is no way this thing can power even my window AC unit. |

Hey guys, hope everyone that got hit is doing fine.As someone who has been through 5 that I can think of off the top of my head let me just say...it's not that bad. With all the power out for a couple of days(or weeks in my past experiances) the view at night is awsome and forcing yourself to get rid of all the food in your fridge before it goes bad is a good excuse to turn on the grill and get the neighbors to have a block party/clean up party. It sucks but make the best of it guys. Hope all is well, Gur |

I think those of us in the DC area ended up very lucky. Other than some leaves strewn about, it did not even look like it had rain when I woke up Sunday morning. No damage, and the power did not go out. My house backs to a lake, and it looked like authorities opened the dams to accomodate the flooding. Ended up just doing my usual routine of going to church early for rehearsal and playing at our services. We had one person who lived in a rowhouse in DC whose entire room got flooded, in fact, she woke when the water had already soaked her bed. We'll probably be fund raising for her. She's a legal aid lawyer by profession, which means she is a salt of the earth kind of person who does not have a lot of money flowing around. Hope other folks on the east coast check in and let us know if they are alright. |

Manhattan was a ghost town by Saturday afternoon as mass transit began shutting down at noon so much of the restaurant/bar staff had gone home. The places that did stay open were packed and understaffed, but it was good fun because there was nothing much else to do. Lots of apocalyptic camaraderie... At midnight we walked back to an apt five blocks away and the streets were deserted! Very very strange zombie-movie feeling: silent except for the rain and deserted except for slowly patrolling NYPD vehicles. We watched "Let the Right One In" and "30th Century Man" (Scott Walker records have some great bass production I found out) and went to bed still waiting for the wind to pick up, but it never really did. Just lots and lots of rain. When we woke up the next morning, it was still silent but the rain had basically stopped and didn't see any damage except for a few branches luckily. |
