I'm sure King Crimson are a big influence on The Mars Volta.

Both good bands.

Here's a little fun-fact for you, in case ya didn't know...

TMV's current bass player, Juan Alderete, is actually John Alderete from the insane 80's shredder band Racer X.

Here's a bass solo from Racer X's "Live Extreme" album.

Here he is now with TMV:

Yup... same guy!

And here's Juan with the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group...

And he's also in a 3 piece with Rodriguez and Pridgen called Vato Negro... and, well... he's in like a bunch of other shit as well.

Anyway, you guys probably all knew that Juan Alderete was John Alderete and stuff... but, when I made the connection after he joined TMV, I was blown away.

i had the same reaction when i found that out, its so weird to think he was a hair metal guy and now doing tmv but stranger things have happned, look up marlin manson's bass player tom skold, he was in an extremely androgynous hair metal band called shotgun messiah. tmv i guess are having some legal troubles right now because the whole band are preforming tmv songs as Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group for the last couple of months over seas, something about not wanting their new material released through universal.

TMV's original bass player Eva Gardner now plays bass for Pink.

Yes. She's the daughter of Kim Gardner (from The Creation among other bands and session work).

Mars Volta is one of my all time favorite bands...Their music takes me away so far it's beautiful, soulful, and drop dead musically amazing. I graduated from the school of Yes, King Crimson and other killer prog music from my era and then went head over heels into jazz. I think Mars is like this.

Ha, that's awesome about Juan Alderete. It makes pretty good sense, really. TMV is great at bringing virtuosity to punk, or punk to virtuosity, or something. Racer X seemed to me at the time to be a band that brought serious musicianship to metal, to the extent that they didn't really fit in all that well. But they showed nostalgia for what it is, and that's substantially punk IMHO. In any case, I liked 'em, and it's great to see the Alderete connection now. Thanks!

TMV have lost me as they got more and more experimental and proggy, but I really enjoy their first few records.

Still prefer At The Drive-In though. :)

i prefer tmv's first three albums as opposed to their newer stuff cause i think its MORE prog, meaning it was more forward thinking in its sonic landscapes genuinely pushing new ground musically which to me is what great prog does unlike dream theater, new rush, symphony x which just seems to think of prog as "ok how fast and how complicated can we make the song" which is kind of how tmv's newer albums have been and thomas theodore is such an amazing drummer his playing on the first three albums was equal to a young neil peart or bill bruford as far as musicianship and i feel he is rock's equivalent to what billy cobham, lenny white, or alphonse mouzan or tony williams were to jazz in the 60s/70s he brought a new level of virtuosity, dynamics, imagination and musicianship into the genre and made a huge impact on the bands sound, and while his replacement is a gifted drummer i think he lacks the same musicality that theodore brought to them and their newer stuff has suffered and become more "run of the mill" as far as what prog is today and i for one am really looking forward to their next album with yet another new drummer to see what he brings to fold..........ok rant over
