Hey Guys, Trying out for a college jazz band soon, and was wondering what you think some good audition pieces would be? I need to go balls out for this as there is some guy trying out that's been playing for 32 years  Any general advice / ideas? I was thinking Billie's bounce |

non-traditional student. Unfortunately as long as you pay tuition it doesn't matter your age |

In my experience, years playing has nothing to do with how great of a player someone is... there are hundreds of other factors. Here's my advice... Confidence outweighs complexity... so I would pick something you know in and out and backwards and forwards before I would pick something just because you think the difficulty will impress people. It will ALWAYS look better if you play a less difficult song with ease than if you struggle to play something incredibly difficult. Smile... be calm... be confident without being smug. Be polite... listen to questions and have questions prepared in case you have the opportunity. Don't try to impress... just be yourself. If you don't get the gig after that, then it just wasn't meant to be... there's a reason for everything, and something just as good or better will come along eventually. Good luck! |

Hm, you have a good point Addison. I was going to do Billie's bounce soley because it's Parker, well known, and I love the style. But on second thought I might pick the reading piece from last year's District Band auditions that I placed in, as I know it in and out. Also, is 1000$ for a 3 year old warwick corvette $$ good? |

I might be able to help with the Warwick question as I own and have owned many. The Corvette simply indicates a body shape design from Warwick and there are tons of variables... 1. Active or passive? 2. 4, 5, or 6 string? 3. Ash or Bubinga? 4. Rockbass (China) New Pro (Korea) Old Pro Line (German) Standard (German)? 5. German models obviously worth more. 6. Is the pickup config a JJ, Soapbar, FNA, or FNA Jazzman? 7. Is it a limited edition? 8. Neck through or Bolt on? Sorry but to give an accurate value these questions need to be answered and not only to determine a fair market price but also more importantly will you like it and will it be the right tool for the job you need it to do. |
