I started out on guitar before going to bass as my main instrument. I had wanted to play bass all along, but I thought guitar would be more fun to play on your own and that bass would be boring to play without other musicians to accompany. I now know I was wrong :P

I still have a couple of guitars, but they're mostly gathering dust now. I just can't get myself to sell the ones I have left. I own a G&L ASAT Special, an ESP Horizon, an old Japanese E-series Squier, a Squier Affinity Strat (my first guitar, I will never sell that one. I modded the heck out of it), a Crafter D7 dreadnought and a Taylor Baby.

I play guitar, though I took it up about 10 years after I had already been playing bass. Oddly enough, I play guitar professionally more often than bass, as I'm in a couple of wedding/cover bands that require me to play rhythm guitar. But I'm actually a lead singer first and foremost, so I'm usually recruited for my voice and offer my guitar (or bass) as an added bonus. :) Usually, however, the bands I'm joining are already set with a bassist, so I don't get to do both, but "singing bassist" is what I do best, IMO. At least the guitar playing can get pretty interesting, since one of the bands I'm in I play a guitar synth to cover keyboard parts. Lots of fun seeing people's faces when they hear entire horn sections or Hammond organs coming out of my guitar.

I own about 8 guitars (when I'm not collecting basses), though I am in the market for a good acoustic right now. Current guitars:

'99 Fender Tele '52 RI (equipped with Hipshot B Bender..thanks Bill!)
'87 Fender MIJ Strat
'91 Takamine F360 acoustic
'01 Burns Brian May (First lefty on record!)
'99 Godin LGXSA (my synth guitar)
'83 Jaydee Phantom (Once owned by Dave Wakeling of Enlgish Beat)
'02 SX LP copy
Line 6 Variax 300

I really started on bass but have noodled & ventured into guitar, especially for jazz & funk studies. Can't play lead worth s--t but am a pretty funky rhythm guitarist. Got a MIJ Fender thinline tele, a Hohner Steiny copy from 1990, a Yamaha aco, an old Ibanez Roadstar strat, a Fernandes Zo w/ built in speaker n an old Navarro SG copy, my first electric, from 1973. Oh yeah, I've sold too many great ones, more than I care to remember. As for basses, don't get me started........

I've been messing around with guitar since about the same time I started playing bass many eons ago. In the last year tho, i've decided to take it more seriously and started taking lessons. I have a wonderful teacher who has a Master's in Jazz Performance, and is just about done with his Master's in Music Education.

I am at the point where string bends are becoming a more natural thing to do, which for me is a mind-blowing experience. I still struggle mightily with a "Death Grip" syndrome. I have the hardest time keeping a light touch on the neck of a guitar. Which I suppose comes from thumpin' out those bass grooves for so many years.

And here's my modest collection:
2009 Collings 290 - best dang piece o' mahogany I have EVER owned.
2009 Gibson ES-335
1997 AM Strat
1995 Ric 360-12
2007 Gretsch Duo-Jet
2005 Epiphone Elitist Les Paul
1996 Gibson SG
2007 Martin HD-35
2005 Martin OM-18

although my bass to guitar ratio is pretty one-sided, I love to jam on the guitar :)

now if your topic title was cut off and it was supposed to say:

how many of you play the guitar as well as bass?
haha not me - bass is #1

I love to play righty guitars and basses straight out of the box ( ya I'm a inverted player by trade ), but hand me a "low- E on top" unit and I'll go for it even though the strings are wrong for me.

I've been playing guitar for longer and am much better at it than bass probably. I have a lot of guitars.

In order of purchase:
Ibanez GRX20L
Yamaha FG-412
Fender Jag-Stang
Gibson LP Custom
Epiphone Sheraton II
Seagull S12
Washburn WI66PRO
Takamine Acoustic/Electric
Squier Protone Strat

I also have a Deering 5-string banjo.

I purchased my first bass in between the Jag-Stang and the Gibson. And just today 2 more basses arrived. A Schecter Riot-6 and an Epiphone Viola. Another guitar is on the way sometime soon too. By the way, anyone else think slapping and popping is very hard to do?

well you ARE a good guitar player and that's not a lot of guitars really until you hit 18 or more  and as to pop/slap, my inverted interpretation is more like bang pull...but it does the trick when I am absolutely forced to play that style which is not too often :)

I have a shitty cheap Fender acoustic. It's the token guitar in my Bass room.

I'd say you've got all the bases covered with that collection. A 12 string Rick and a Martin HD-35 are two of my dream guitars, but for now I'm getting by faking them with the Variax. (FYI, the Variax is a fun guitar if you should ever want something that can "do it all" tonally). I used to have a Gretsch Tennessee Rose as well, but sold it a couple of years ago. Someday I'll get another Gretsch.

I can play guitar pretty well... I can play a solid rhythm far better than I can play leads, but that's really only because I'm not the greatest guy with a pick. I can play some pretty intense fingerstyle leads though.

I have a '79 Guild S-60 that I'm still looking ot trade, if anyone is interested in something different.

I really want a black lefty SG so I can pretend I'm Tony Iommi.

I play guitar as well, I have played as long as I have played bass but bass is always my favorite instrument when playing in bands. I play mostly accoustic with a preference for slide and lap steel.
I have 1930's no name jazz guitar turned into a lap steel a Gold Tone Paul Peard dobro and a few other guitars.

thanks PJ, but to tell you the truth, i've been g.a.s.ing for a LP 56 RI and a LP 59 RI for a looooong time. funds aren't there tho, so i guess I'll just have to be more patient.

I studied bass and guitar simultaneously for 4 years, and while guitar is useful for writing and arranging songs, I always had more fun playing bass. The guitar scene is overpopulated I feel; even great guitarists struggle to come up with original ideas because of that. Bass remains the undiscovered country. Every song is a real chance to do something totally new. Having said that, I actually own 1 more guitar (4) than I do basses (3).
