I saw an ad looking for a bass player in a band that plays classic British rock from the 60s and 70s - and they play it with vintage instruments! I am vaguely thinking of trying out, but I don't have any basses that old. I suppose I could get one if I got the gig - I figure I'd just take out a 2nd mortgage and snag that lefty '64 P on e bay for $8,800 (no I am not serious). Any of you ever see this kind of thing or have any of you done something like this? |

There is a Beatles tribute band called 1964 that use authentic vintage amps and instruments for their show. I've talked to a couple of the guys in the band and they are quite obsessive about using period-correct geat that's tweaked out to match what the fab four were using at the time. It keeps their tekkies busy, that's for sure! |

Some of my gear is 20+ years old so I guess I could qualify. |

I was blown away. |

If a band is that obsessive why doesn't it bother them that the gear has 40+ years of aging augmenting the tonal characteristics? Couldn't it be argued that new replica gear would actually be MORE authentic? |

Yeah I was thinking along the same lines - replica gear would be just about as good if not better sounding and would look about the same on stage. The more I think about it the more strange it seems - don't think I'll go for it. |
