It sucks! What are the symptomes? (I have been sick for the past 4 days)

Hope you'll feel better soon!

Apparently it varies - most of the normal flu symptoms plus any of a range of others. I'm told that one of the giveaways is the big sore throat that I had to start things off.

In the UK there is a medical website you can use to check your personal symptoms. When I gave it mine it came back with the slightly worrying 'Flu with Complications.' I think I have a secondary lung infection because I keep bringing up big gobs of unpleasant looking phlegm (sorry but you did ask...). The website has authorised a dose of the T'amiflu antiviral. At some point I'm expecting to have to go to my doctor to get some antibiotics as well.

Writing this from my bed - and now I'm wiped so I'm going to keel over again. Happy days!

Thanks for the support guys. It's appreciated. Looks like my wife has it now as well - she woke up this morning with a major headache (which was odd straightaway cos I'm sleeping in the spare bedroom! ).

Looks like it's gonna be pretty quiet around these parts for the next week or so.

The one good thing about this, is you and your wife will develop defenses against this strain of flu, and will be immune for quite some time to come, until it mutates to the point that you will be susceptible again. I've had that happen to me over the years as quite virulent flu strains have come through Hawaii.

Work with your doctor, and take antibiotics if you can, as they will stop the symptoms from becoming worse. I've done it both ways, where I've toughed it out on my own, and it took two months to completely recover, and with antibiotics that cut the time down to one month instead. It's still a bitch, but with the antibiotics, I didn't develop the first stages of walking pneumonia.

Good luck, get lots of rest, and eat healthy, easily digestible foods that won't tax your system.

Love and Aloha, and a speedy recovery for you and your wife, and sending good vibes from Hawaii....

Ian

Thanks for the good advice and good wishes Ian. We're taking an Antiviral called Tamiflu - don't know if you have it? In the UK it's free to anyone who is symptomatic, and it definitely helps. Jan & I are both vegetarian and eat lots of salad anyway, which helps. Although I'm making odd little funnies about it, we're both taking it very seriously. Also we have very good neighbours who will get food & stuff for us if we ask them (we're effectively under 7 - day quarantine). The lung congestion has thankfully improved but is still a factor.

I know it's the best thing we can do right now, but I hate being cooped up like this - I'd rather be out there teaching and playing.

Andy

I am glad to hear that Tamiflu is "free" in the UK. It won't happen in the US believe me.

There are pretty tight restrictions on it's availability - you have to be clearly symptomatic, and you only get one pack (10 capsules - 5 days). It's being done to prevent profiteering and hoarding, both of which are potentially big problems over here. News channels and written news sources have not been exactly encouraging us to stay calm, which IMHO borders on criminal irresponsibility for the sake of selling the story. Yes it is potentially dangerous if we don't treat it with respect, act with due care and take suitable precautions; but that's not the same thing as encouraging people to panic.

Sorry if I'm sounding off a bit too much but it does annoy me.

You have every right to be annoyed.... the media is no longer about reporting the news, as sensationalizing events to sell advertising and stay on top of the ratings polls. Don't get me started.... that's why I stay away from topics such as this, and politics and religion.....

OK, I'm better now.... I'm glad to read that your doctor is erring on the side of caution, and keeping you away from the public. Not so much for what you may spread, as for how much sicker you could become from picking up other diseases, infections, etc., because your immune system is very weak at the moment.

I'm sure I speak for all of the Leftybassists in wishing you and your wife a speedy and safe recovery....

Aloha Vibes,
Ian

Over here we call profiteering within the healthcare system "standard procedure/good business"

I am pleased to report that I am now definitely getting better. Still coughing more than I'd like but otherwise starting to get back to something like normality. Feel like I've just lost a week of my life! :x Janette still below the radar but giving it time.

Many thanks to all concerned for the messages of support - it was appreciated.
