Thank you PJ! According to the guys at Musikhaus Thomann, where I bought my NS, I'm their very first female, left-handed, 5-string-upright-buying customer!

My fretless Corvette 5 now plays and sounds like a dream after I replaced the pretty horrid roundwounds it came with with D'Addario Chromes. I'm absolutely hooked on flats, and I've got either D'Addario or Thomastik-Infeldt flats on every single bass I own.

Mike, yes, the lefty NS is perfectly symmetrical to the righty version, and is about about £100 more expensive just for the privilege.
It does feel very comfortable when you play, though. In fact, so comfortable that I'm having to slightly modify my double-bass playing style on it, because the strings are low tension and the body is small, and there is no need to apply the full-on pizzicato style - it can almost be played like a bass guitar stood on end.

Do you bow?

Nah, I've been tempted to learn to, but I've never actually tried so far. I think I would somehow feel a bit out of place bowing on the NS, despite it having a switch for the correct setup etc. I would probably feel more at home bowing on the HB, what with it looking and sounding like a more traditional double bass. (Must find and upload those damn photos!)
But as I said, learning to bow is rather low on my list of priorities at the moment.
Do you bow on yours?

I have an Engelhardt that I bow, but I rarely play it anymore. Once you get the resin on those strings, they just tear the hell out of your fingers.

Ugh, and ouch. Doesn't sound like much fun...! I think I'll stick to plucking, then.

Hey all, found this place a few weeks ago; been lurking for a while and figured it was time to settle in and join, what with the number of times I visit.

So an introduction... well, my name's Charles, I've been a bass player for... three months, now; had an interest for much, much longer, but finding a lefty on a college student's budget is nearly impossible. I managed to nail down an Ibanez GSRM20L from Musician's Friend back in Feb for right at $100usd, thanks to timing and a coupon code, and have been teaching myself from the ground up. My musical background is spotty, but I've played piano on-and-off (most recently off) for around 10 years, and have been singing (not recently) for a bit longer. I do a bit of percussion on a djembe, and play with a midi synth emulator when I've got the time; weirdly enough, trying to get a more folk or blues sound out than the classic electronica.I suppose my passion lies in the older blues, americana, folk, yanno, stuff that modern twenty-five year-olds aren't supposed to get.

Aspirations? To keep practicing and get good enough to enjoy myself with others of a similar passion.

Welcome to the forum... sounds like you're on the right track. Take some lessons when you can, it will jump-start your learning curve, and you'll learn good habits right from the start. Good luck, and enjoy playing bass!

My name's Richard; I live in Seattle. I've been checking out this site for some time now... thought it's about time I join. I've been playing bass for 18 years, most notably in three relatively successful northwest bands - Radio Nationals (1999-2005), Dear John Letters (2001-2006), and Young Sportsmen (2005-2008). My bands have been fortunate to open for some great bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Black Crowes, Ian Hunter, Cracker/CVB, and others. I've toured with Johnny Hickman (Cracker) and played with Alan White (John Lennon/Yes). These days I don't tour or play in a gigging band anymore. Now I've got a great family and I jam weekly with a bunch of great guys (one guy has a music studio on his property so it's full blown rock and roll jamming).

I'd own almost every lefty bass up for sale but my wife would kill me (and we wouldn't be able to afford my daughter's preschool) - I'm sure others are in the same boat.

I'm a Beatlemaniac and love too many bands and styles of music to list. I'm a music trivia buff... This week I've listened to Alice Cooper's Killers, Chicago's first record, a bunch of Beatles, Elvis Costello, and Whiskeytown. I'm a sucker for power pop a la Sloan and Spoon.

Welcome to the club. I wished I you had registered earlier. I was in Seattle a couple of times recently for work related matters, and would have loved to hear your jam band, and meet a fellow lefty bassist. Our resident luthier also lives in that part of the country.
