There is another lefty female bassist I found, her name is Natalie Vandenhurk, she has a bunch of videos posted on YouTube. Here is her cover of Daddy Cool's Eagle Rock:

Cool because both she and Daddy Cool are Aussie. Female lefty Australian fretless player, does it get any better than that?

Don't know if this is 100% true but I have heard in European countries the percentage of lefties is considerably higher...Spector, Warwick, and even most Japanese and Korean companies don't seem to have a problem with making lefties. :?

In one trio I played in as a guitarist, the singer/bassist was a lefty. Played a '70s Musicman or a Hohner copy. She eventually moved away, but I did not found out until years later that she sold the Musicman to a local store. I doubt she got much! Grrrr!

I don't know, maybe you guys are right... but if those numbers are truly accurate, then it would seem to me that if I were a major manufacturer there would really be NO motivation AT ALL for me to mass produce ANY left handed basses in advance. For 1-3% of the total market? Everything would be special order ONLY....

Do they ever show any kind motivation? (besides our friends Rodent and Screambass and a few other small instrument makers) As far as we know, many of us were told by those manufacturers that they were somewhat producing lefties out of charity.
In another thread somebody was doubting that manufacturers were making no money producing lefties. If you know a little bit about manufacturing, I totally believe it is true in this case. That's why all of us should always encourage lefty players to start playing lefty, hence increasing our leverage.

I have seen documentation that Fender's lefty production is under 2% of their total bass builds. I have recently discussed this with a prominent custom builder in the NY/Philly area. He confirmed that his lefty production also runs under 2%, so from what data I have seen the numbers reported above appear representative. My guess is that mass production houses (read Fender) produced a greater percentage of lefties in the 60's and 70's when a large number of players learned on their own. Today a lot of new, young players start with lessons and are strongly encouraged to learn righty particulary if they are involved in school programs or take lessons at local mom & pop shops that only stock "normal" rightys.

when i started playing and went into my first lesson, i was told to go and buy a righty bass. The "teacher" said that i shouldn't learn to play lefty and that it would be hard to learn that way. What a fucking load of shit. I was sincerely offended and never went back.

So wouldn't a 1% to 3% number have to mean that over 70% of natural Lefties just cop out and decide to learn to play right handed (or worse, that a disporportionate number of left handed people never try to learn to play at all)?

Yes, as amimbari said, that's exactly what that means.

Talkbass has an entire club for "Lefties Who Play Righty"... I was almost one of them myself, but I was too stubborn.

In hindsight, I wish I would have listened. :x

Where do I fit in? LOL

Where is the club for the righties that play lefty???

I'm the same way. I only play bass and hold a baseball bat left-handed, everything else is righty. I had a similar conversation with TM Stevens once. He's a lefty for everything else other than playing bass. We decided that "we were right," in that the strong hand should be the fretting hand.

Sorry guys! Image
I have arrived...
Started in May playing a 70s relic sunburst righty Fender Mustang bass upside-down. The pick-up didn't work though, so that can only be fun until the yearn for the rumble kicks in... Then "the unicorn" found me in July & the rest is history - or at least the beginnings of a long, beautiful impassioned friendship. (Although I secretly - not a secret anymore - miss playing upside-down because it gives you some unique sounds!)
http://competitionmustang.blogspot.com/ - check out pics & the "full story" here.
Don't worry, I haven't come to conquer, just play some crazy bass! =)
Btw, we are definitely not alone - Gliese 581 G folks!
