Frenchy: There is an actual hard rock band in NYC that makes original music but moonlights as a kids' band to make money. It's actually quite a subculture here and the unusual thing is that it's one of the few genres where original music is not only accepted but expected by the families. Anyway, IFC made a Monkees-style television show about the group (who played themselves). It was really good:

The sad truth is that it's not even the bar owners, it's the audience. I grew up on the East coast of Florida, and the bar crowds there just weren't interested in 'new' music. We were stuck playing the same old crap ("Margaritaville", "Cocaine", "Wonderful Tonight", etc.) over and over. A lot of the guys I would play or jam with gave up and started playing country. No shortage of places to play, but unless you were willing to slog over to Orlando (and fight it out with their larger number of local bands), there was no audience for an "original high-energy show". People don't want to hear that, they want to go out and hear songs they know.

+1 I used to live in south florida and now in Jacksonville, and unless you're in a top 40 band good luck getting a gig, that is actually why I am having trouble keeping bands together, no clubs around here are willing to take a chance on an original band. The band I am in right now is on hiatus(?) because the singer/guitarist has been gigging with a 90s/early 2000s hard rock cover band. The only solution I see is a couple of bands I know down in west palm made their own 2 day festival at some residential club house, sold tickets there, merch, food, beverages, they controlled every aspect and they made a good deal of cash.

This is something that I wanted to mention earlier but forgot. I don't know how much you can make a living off this, but if you want money for gigs and build a following, this is exactly the way to go. It's a lot of work, but it is the best way to guarantee money and gradually build a following. And it's an investment because as you become familiar, more people want to do parties with you which are more elaborate and allow you to ask a bit more at the door. Two of my previous bands operated this way successfully and a few - Screaming Females springs to mind - have gotten really huge this way. Having said that you have to be prepared to live in your van and have no life at the gigs as you will always be doing tickets, merch etc. Two weeks ago I saw SF's bassist at the merch table pretty much every moment before and after he was on stage.

Yes I watched the show, that was quite funny but heck, if you can make a living out of playing music, whatever it is, it is better than working for the man! My buds did one show just for fun and it was so successful that it became a 3 year tour.

That was good! Very original and I could actually understand some of the kid-level French. Lefty guitarist too....

On a totally unrelated note, it reminded me how skinny European people are.
