I seem to recall reading somewhere that Jaco's bass eventually did turn up again.

The Beatles of course also had that Fender VI that John & George played before they got the Jazz. As far as I know, its whereabouts are also unknown.

I'm pretty sure that Trujillo got his hands on Jaco's bass and had it restored. Can't remember if he kept it or donated it to Jaco's family, though.

Since the bass of doom was in pieces after Jaco destroyed it, it was actually repaired/restored at Jaco's request before it ever disappeared... the story is that Jaco gave it up to someone for cash, but his family maintains it was stolen from him.

Personally, I believe Jaco sold it for extra cash soon after he got it back... especially when you consider where he was at in his life at that time.

Anyway, when it finally resurfaced, Trujillo fronted the cash for it and promised to give it back to the Pastorius family after he was paid back in full, with no interest. I think he paid a cool million for it.

While he's waiting to be paid back, he's apparently getting his money's worth:
