That's to hold down the bridge so it won't lift.
The one I had was lifting a bit.

Yeah. Sometime in the mid 80s those screws became standard because tail lift is such a problem. I wish they would have put them on the bridge of the 4001v63 because mine is lifting, as well. For the life of me, I don't understand why they didn't. Mine will have to be replaced, eventually.

Apparently many Ric loyalists hated the two additional screws.

My Greco copy is so authentic it's got bridge lift, too. :D

They had quite a few questionable design practices with their basses. The bridges have long been an issue. Next to impossible to intonate without taking the strings off (?!!!) not to mention, they're not the most customer friendly. I had an older Ric that needed a few replacement parts (the headstock logo plate) and I called Rickenbacker to order one, after sending pics of the broken plate and then sending them the plate itself (along with pics of the serial number) I had to wait 3 months for it. After a month or so, I called to check on it and was told that I needed to wait if I wanted it. I was told "we can just send you back your old one and that'll be that"
