You mean you told her about it? I don't tell my wife anything, until one day she stumbles over another acquisition and says, "Why does it seem like you have more basses than I thought?"

I picked up a black one a couple of years ago on a closeout price for about the same price. Thought I'd love it. I don't. My Epi sounds better. Very muddy PUPs. Not sure if that's true of all T-Birds, since I've seen plenty of demos on YouTube with plenty of clarity to them, so maybe it was just the PUPs they installed that year?

Ha ha, I'm so guilty of this. But my wife isn't a 'things' person, so she can't tell the different between one bass and another.

I had a black Squier and a natural L2000 tribby, and she saw me play both fairly regularly. Then I got a Sire V7 in tobacco burst and kept it under wraps for a few months. But when I put a set of TI jazz rounds (yes, rounds) on it, I became so enamored that I threw caution to the wind and started playing it openly. She honestly didn't realize that it was new bass she hadn't seen before.

So now I only have one bass that she doesn't know about...

Eventually you get so many that acquiring another one is more of a rounding error that the wife doesn't really notice!

We're city dwellers, so our issue is space (since, for the moment at least, I seem to have cheap tastes). Even with my modest collection, I have to move a case or two to access my closet. But she doesn't want me to hang more than one from the wall, either.

It's okay. I'm learning to make do with the five I have, plus the fretless on loan from my brother

I wonder if they didn't use the wrong value pots? Mine is also way too dark sounding.

I once saw a review of a right handed one that sounded too dark...

Yeah, I thought about that as well, or at least I've considered replacing them with brighter pots. I assume they're supposed to be 250k? I'll have to open it up and check to see what's installed in there.

500k pots are brighter than 250k and are what are commonly used in guitars with humbuckers.

It's a reverse logic thing and hard to explain easily, so if you're interested in the whys and hows, here's some nerdy reading...

I didn't realize the PUPs were two humbuckers. Assumed they'd be two singles that humbuck when combined, ala Fender. The old Fender Tele Bass with the Seth Lover PUP at the neck had a 1K pot. Still sounded like mud. Yeah, I'll check the readings now.

You'll get more treble output with 500k --> 1meg pots but I believe the taper is less gradual. For instance, the old 70's Dimarzio pups like 500k and 1meg pots for more treble. The old BC Rich basses shipped with 1meg Pots on the double P pickup models (so I hear).

Sounds here like the Gibson pickups are just would for low end. Maybe swap out?
