I not familiar enough with Alembic to know if this is a good starting price or not, but I have the feeling some of you might be interested nevertheless...

So here it is for you Alembic fans:

Haven't seen a lefty Epic in a while, and a 5 string is a bit rarer than a 4. I'd say the price is fair, not great, while the BIN is way too high.

I have a '95 Epic - a 4 string model - that was about 10 years old when I got it. I paid a little more than the starting price for that one, and to be honest, that was probably a bit too much - even then. And honestly, IMO Epics don't improve with age. It is a very, very nice bass (it's an Alembic, after all), but stock Epic electronics are about as simple as active systems get; so don't expect anything spectacular out of it. Frankly, I find mine kind of underwhelming, actually. If you feel you really need one? Provided you could get it for $2200 or less - yeah, maybe. But personally? I wouldn't pay any more than that, even if I did want another active bass - and a 5-stringer, to boot. :)

It's interesting that the Epic is Alembic's entry level bass, and it still costs over four-grand! That's probably why the seller is starting it at $2000, although he hasn't had a single bid yet... I got quite lucky several years ago, and bought an Epic 5-string from on of our forum members for $800 plus shipping! Still have it, and it stays at a friend's Music-Jam Mancave. It's quite clear sounding, and cuts through the other instruments well. Don't think I'll ever sell it, simply because I got it for too good of a deal! Here's the original thread, with pictures I posted of it after it arrived...

That's a beauty! heck of a price you paid for it too. :)

I bought a 4 string Epic about 10 or so? years ago, a '96, and I think I paid $1100 for mine. Agree with your assessment. A very clear, cutting bass, some might say, "sterile". Neck on mine is a bit chunkier than I'm used to. But it IS an Alembic, even if it's their entry level instrument, and I'm keeping mine. I thought about upgrading the onboard electronics at some point, but like most of my projects, haven't found the time

Mine looks like 5bass' - with one less string. Also, I'm wondering if the seller's price might have to do with his being in Japan... :?:
