Oh man, had some major medical expenses as in kidney stone surgeries this past summer and my oldest daughter in second year at PITT and it's killing my wallet. I have to move a few basses and a guitar. Anyone interested in anything you see please feel free to contact me with questions and deals can be worked out lower than evil bay of course. Questions for the sake of questions like "can you take the neck off the Lull for me to see it cause I think it's cool to ask stuff like that" without any serious interest in purchasing please avoid if possible but I will do my best to answer any serious inquiries. Thanks for understanding... http://www.ebay.com/itm/201459306888?ss ... 1555.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/201459283251?ss ... 1555.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/201459294474?ss ... 1555.l2649 |

Absolutely and I can give you a full run down on both. I did all the work to the carvin I can even show pics of my work in progress. Chris Addison had owned the Lull for a while and I traded/bought back from him. Feel free to contact him and Gravesbass as they have both had a turn with the Lull. |

The Carvin was an eBay purchase and I don't have pictures of it before I started the refinishing process. The thick polyurethane finish was delaminating from the oily Claro Walnut and really all over the bass. This was caused by a bad batch of poly or a bad preparation of the surface to be sprayed. I had to use a heat gun to remove the bulk of the poly and final stages were hand sanding. I was blown away by the Claro top it is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever seen. As it began to reveal itself I wanted to upgrade the bass along with it. The Carvin preamp in my opinion is one of the weakest parts of a Carvin they are actually super well made. But they sound pretty bad out of the box although some of the newer models I hear are far better today. After sanding down to raw wood we did a Danish oil rub to get deep into the wood and the Danish oil I had on hand is called fruitwood and it gave it a slightly orange-brown tint to some of the maple and I thought it looked great. This also would help anything we put on top with an oil base not look so blotchy. We then did 4-6 coats of thinly applied poly-rub in satin and it has a wood feel as in you can see and feel the grain reminiscent of my German Warwicks. I love this feel it’s more organic and it’s my preference especially on beautiful woods I simply hate glossy finishes on instruments. They look nice but to me feel sticky and after holding for two minutes greasy and gross IMO. Also the huge plastic nut was more than an eyesore so that went in the trash and I cut a new one out of a bar of solid brass and carved it and buffed it out on my buffer. It started to have a slight Warwick feel to it so why not I had an older MEC 3 band preamp from an old German Thumb Warwick from the 90’s and installed it with the tone pots. Originally the Thumb had active pups and these are passive pickups so I had to use 250K pots for passive pups.

Few more of the process.. My buddy Kirk who is my building partner is applying the Danish oil. I am much more ugly than him.

That is so cool thanks for posting. It came out great. The weight for a walnut six string is not bad at all. |

Incredible re-fin on this bass, and it looks great! And, I'm sure it sounds great too with the MEC upgrades, nut, etc. For the price you're offering your lefty members, this is a steal/deal! Wish I had some wiggle-room in my budget - I'd be all over this! |

Thanks fivebass52, the Carvin is already sold. We covered our costs for parts Kirk and I, he's my building partner and made a couple bucks. We do bass "rehabs" to help us develop our skills for building from scratch basses. I think it's the best way to learn and in the process you pass on a bass to someone who you hope will love it and make a few bucks for wood and stuff for the shop. The best builders I know of always continue to do repairs and learned from the bottom up doing simple repairs to re attaching headstocks on Les Pauls. I'll sell the Lull to anyone here on the board for $1850 plus shipping. The only thing we did to that was a good fret level and the action is super low and fast to play. Addison did the preamp work while he had it under his roof and he did an excellent job. |

Thumbslam, too bad you're on the other side of the planet from me, otherwise I'd send my basses to you for tweaking! |

Thanks again fivebass, It's funny I started all this because I just couldn't find what I like in basses all in one bass and there was nobody around that could do any repairs very well or I would wait 4-5 weeks to get something done and it was never done well. I sold 10 high end basses to build my shop in my basement and it's been so great. The best part it's not my job I am a salesman during the day and I do this at nights and weekends. I can go downstairs and work for 20 minutes or 10 hours it's the greatest and I am not doing this for the money. If my partner and I make a few bucks to build basses for ourselves that's great but it's just for the love of it. Thursday nights is my "bass" night Kirk and I work for hours and it's an open door to local musicians to come and get work done. We have guys come by all the time and I guess I'm anti business I ask that they stick around and watch and even do some of it with us to learn and see how it's done. They throw us a few bucks to cover expenses and that's great. We usually can turn around fret leveling or set ups, preamp or pickup replacement while they are there. I would have killed to have a guy like me around when I was younger. Working on 5 builds as we speak.....Anyone welcome to come by bass night.. |

Hey thumbslam I got the Carvin today arrived in fine shape. Wow that preamp makes the bass a totally different animal than any Carvin I've ever played. I've only played one Warwick but I've heard quite a few clips and this bass sounds more to me like a Warwick than a Carvin. On a stock Carvin, the hum bucker sounds good but with this bass when both coils are on it rips your face off! The wood on it is beautiful and you did a really nice job refinishing it. It's killer - thanks! Put together a little jam with it pretty much clean flat controls on amp and bass just a little bass boost; kinda sloppy but it gives an idea of the tone: http://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-54248.php |
