He bought it in 2007. Thats an earlier 4LX model (pre-EURO4LX naming convention). If it has the Aguilar OBP-1 pre installed (older flatter style) then its probably a 2002 - 2004. These are good basses and have the SS crown inlay logo at the headstock (notice its thinner). The wings are solid maple, not 3 piece sandwich. Good bass. I have the same year in Blue/Dark Purple gloss finish / Gold hardware. I will be moving it most likely soon. It too has the Aguilar OBP-1 pre and the true left handed solid brass bridge (heavy) and helps the body balance perfect, no neck dive. If interested, I will post pics up soon. i don't WANT to sell it, but property taxes are taking away my christmas money this year. I have to move a few basses. Thanks! |

The Spector arrived yesterday. As far as I can tell it is an early 2000s (2002-2004ish) Euro 4 (pre-LX) with the Aguilar OBP-1 preamp and active EMG P/J pickups. Solid quilted maple wings and 3-piece all maple neck through construction. Initial impressions in no particular order: - looks awesome, irregular quilt pattern makes the front quite interesting - super solid feeling and well balanced.. comfortable body shape - unbelievably hot output - great modern, aggressive, active sound - killer for slap - scooped sound with the preamp controls at '0' (preamp is boost only) - overall bright but big low end (a bit woofy) can be dialed in with the preamp bass boost Anybody have a Spector? Any tips on dealing with the crazy hot output? It instantly overdrives every piece of gear I own when turned up full. I'd like to be able to use the full range of the volume and preamp controls without causing an earthquake |

Ping Gravesbass about Spector stuff. I have a couple but I don't know much about the various preamps they've had. The OBP-3 in my Euro4LX sounds phenomenal. Does the OBP-1 have a trimpot on it to reduce the gain? You could always swap the preamp, there are some great options, including proper HAZ preamp clones to get the bass sounding as close to the USA and vintage 80's models as possible. Darkglass makes an onboard preamp that Spector now offers as an option too and the reviews of it have been good. But if you want a more refined, less aggressive bass tone I'd look at the Aguilar OBP-3 (it's boost and cut), or Bartolini, EMG, etc. preamp. |

Thanks for the tips! I want to keep the signature Spector sound but just want to knock the output back a bit. I'll look into some of the options you mentioned. Cheers |

You could always install a Spector Tonepump preamp with a trimpot. That's the preamp that traditionally comes in a Euro Spector and the trimpot will help curb that very hot signal. An easy trick to try too is to drop your pickup height down. |

Hey stillcenter, I am running right now but i'll update a few notes. First off, congrats on that snag. Thats a "very" cheap price for the older EURO4 bass. It's a EURO4 model (not a EURO4LX). This was released before they changed the name and added the LX. The Aguilar OBP-1 preamp is fine. It's actually a great preamp for the EURO4's. The issue you have is they factory wire the preamp with lefty orientation/turning pots. This doesn't work well. What you need to do its have someone rewire the bass and treble pots "righty orientation". This way you will get a clean gradual boost and it won't be "on" right away and hot. How you have it now, they turn a little then immediate boost. I did this to quite a few Spector's from the factory and it works much better. The volumes are fine. I have a near identical EURO4 like yours and its got the same specs. The older EURO basses are great. They have a different tone with the solid wings, I can walk you thru the wiring over a private PM. Enjoy! NOT: I do have a newer TonePump preamp with adjustable output dial I am going to post on talkbass soon. If interested private ping me. I pulled it out of a Spector 2015 bass. TonePumps have the same writing issue. You have to reverse the treble and bass to get clean boost. Mine is reversed. |

Much appreciate the info, gravesbass. I'll PM you for details. One more thought I had... should I have this turned into a fretless? I generally dislike changing my instruments from their stock configs but I imagine such a conversion can be done in a somewhat reversible fashion. I'd probably have to coat the fretboard though which is the primary thing giving me pause. I like the idea of an aggressive, 'mwah'-sounding 4-string fretless... Just a thought, don't crucify me |
