In Japan. Hard to read the serial #. It's my understanding that there were not many of this type of neck produced. If so a lefty would be pretty rare, but I'n no expert! Not the best condition , but not the worse. Can't read the date on the pots or the end of the neck and there is a crack in the binding above the truss rod adjustment. Truss rod is adjust a bit deap. A better shot of the neck pocket and the back of the heal of the neck would be nice. Price seems a bit high. I'm sure I've missed other issues. Thought it was worth a look http://www.ebay.com/itm/161737067776?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

Look closely, the dots are on top of something that's obscuring the block inlays. This bass looks like an $8000+ abused hunk of shit.

Or a late 60s. I can't remember off the top of my head which year the block/binding combo started.

A number of cosmetic changes were made to the instrument when CBS purchased the Fender companies in 1965. During 1965/66 the Jazz Bass received bound rosewood fingerboards with pearloid dot position inlays (which replaced the older "clay"-style of the early 1960s) and oval-shaped tuning machines. Block-shaped fingerboard inlays and an optional maple fingerboard were introduced after 1966/67. At first necks with rosewood fretboards received pearloid blocks/binding and maple fretboard necks received black.

Are you sure Matt? I'm looking at it on a small screen, but it looks to me like it could be the opposite way- like at some point there were block inlay decals covering up the dots, and now you can see the discoloration from where they've been removed?

I don't know. I guess it's possible too, but it screams early 70s to me.

Serial # puts it at 1969-1970, so blocks would've been the factory inlay.

This poster on my wall is of a 1966 with bound neck and pearloid dots (and oval-shaped tuning machines):

The neckplate serial number on the listed bass (277982) would date it to 1969. So who knows what's up with it... but I'd sure as hell have a better answer if I was asking $8000 for it...

P.S. More weirdness- notice that unlike the bass in the poster, there's no double dot markers at the 12th fret? Matt, I think that supports your theory that the blocks were swapped out.

Also, that truss rod has been to the depths. This bass is a bad idea at that price.

Why is there a dot at the 1st fret?

Also if you look real close the last dot is partly outside the block area, so a sticker wouldn't have completely covered it.
