Posted this to eBay last night, I know there have been folks here interested in it before so thought I'd give a heads up:

Nice. That would look great with a gold anodized guard. Does this bass need a new nut to restring lefty?

True- I had been thinking the same thing - I know it takes a bit of tweaking to convert a right handed gold anodized guard for lefty use, but if I don't sell it, I will probably go for one. No new nut needed, I just flipped it so it can be easily flipped back.

The thing I really love about this particular bass, I don't know what Fender Japan was doing in 1995, because the look of it is perfect for a '57- finish isn't overly thick or glossy, hardware lightly aged, but everything about it is natural, not relic job- so compared to the newer RIs it looks/ feels more like an old bass that someone kept in pristine condition.

According to the Japanese brochures, lefty 57RI's are basswood bodies whereas righty ones are alder...

I haven't researched what they were using in 1995, but it does have a much more pronounced grain pattern than my 2005 62 RI does, and I've also heard that they may have used different woods depending on whether it was a solid color or transparent finish- but I don't know whether any of that info is totally reliable or not.

I know a lot of folks debate, have opinions, preferences, etc. about it, but in my personal experience having owned over a dozen different MIJ RI Fenders of various years and woods, to be honest I haven't found that the alder ones all sounded measurably different than the basswood ones or vice-versa. Of course some sounded better than others, but it didn't have anything specifically to do with the wood type.

If I were a betting man, I'd say that looks like alder. Also, that is a damn nice bass.
