So what's up with all these crazy low prices on Rics?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2014-Rickenbacker-4003-LEFT-HANDED-Bass-MIDNIGHT-BLUE-unplayed-MINT-/151456452988?pt=Guitar&hash=item234382117c

That store has a few. I haven't seen Ric prices so low in like 5 years. I had two at one time and bought them both for close to $1500, and then saw the crazy bubble start. . . I know they stopped making them, then started again and I guess that now they are catching up and making a lot.

A good time to buy if you ask me!

I saw that too. Sometimes I miss my old Rick(4003-5) and think about another, but I think the scale length would still be too long for me...and then I remember how heavy & uncomfortable to play it was. But damn that sound...

I don't consider $2200 to be a low price considering that no one's paid more than $2000 for a 4003 over the last few months. (source: Ebay sold auctions)

Just my 2 cents.

Good point. I haven't followed the prices closely, but I just recall seeing ridiculous prices, like more than $3K on a regular basis.

I bought a red 2014 several months back and to be quite honest, it didn't come close to the quality and sound as my 80's and 90's RIC's I used to own. I sent it back after I returned from Winter NAMM 2014. They are supposed to be out of production. Not sure what's up with that as I see a lot of them popping up. A fair price is $1750 :D

I've only been into Rics recently, so I don't know how they used to be. I heard the necks were thinner.

(I'm happy with the quality and feel of my Greco for sure :))

Guitar Showcase has 2 new 4003's (one on display and one still in the box). Both FG. They're asking $2000.

I played the one on display - it was OK but the neck wasn't for me and I'm not a big fan of FG. Dan wouldn't let me play the one in the box unless I was serious about buying.

Have you played the one on display gravesbass? Given your experience I'm wondering what you thought of it.

I think you're right about them being cheaper than they were in 2010. I think the lefty community wasn't sure lefties were ever going to be made again, or if so, how many would be made.

Some of the asking prices for Rics are just insane, imo - I just don't think that's what folks are actually paying.

@ bbl, I haven't been to Showcase in a while. I should stop by there soon and check what they got. My buddy is shipping manager there. He could take whatever out of the box if needed or if someone was interested is seeing. Dan just wants the sale but a good dude. They are all pretty much the same excluding setup.

The older ones just sounded so much better and the necks were thin and thick depending on the years. Mine were on the thinner side from what I remember but moved a lot.

Prices have been down for a little while... I think some of it has been shotty QC and also a lack of color options. Jetglo and Fireglo are your only options now.

I was only able to get $1900 for my absolutely perfect 2012 Mapleglo 4003 like 6 months ago... and they don't even make that color anymore.

Olivia's Vintage has both a Ruby Red and Midnight Blue 4003.

Oh, cool... good to see!

Hopefully they've reopened the color options and they're not just fulfilling orders from when those colors were available.

Midnight Blue's one of my favorite Rick finishes.

Surprised to hear about shoddy QC. You'd think that with their deliberate limited manufacturing output they'd pay more attention to detail, unless demand got so high a few years ago that they had to keep up with demand. You have to hand it to them though, they successfully managed to convince everyone that paying 45% more for their instruments in the mid-2000s was worth it 'cause the demand really escalated.
