I love these. I know, I know. It ain't vintage and is kinda uncool. But, I like the P body better than a Jazz. (Which this has.) I also like the J neck better than the P. (Which this has.) And, I love the added versatility of a second pickup in the bridge position. (Which - you guessed it - this has.) Hmmmm, 3.5 hour drive from Toronto eh........... |

Why are they uncool? Those are really killer instruments. |

Haha. I know Matt. I was just being... glib? I think that's the word. My apologies if it was taken the wrong way. I really love these basses as well. I was just playfully poking fun at that side of all of us here that puts so much weight in matching date stamps and perfectly placed headstock decals. For that part of me/us, there's really nothing to dissect here. It's just a players bass. Therefore, in some peoples eyes, probably a little boring. Still not gonna stop me from seeing how much the shipping to Toronto is. |

The pickups were specially made for the Hod Rod, so keep in mind that the HR isn't traditional P - you won't get the same P sound with the J pickup rolled off. It is, however, a great tone with both pickups completely open. |

My Hot Rod came in and I can answer my own question...it's more trebly and less punchy than a standard P as far as I can tell. Anyone else want to weigh in? |

That sums up my impression. I played my HR on my band's final gig and I absolutely loved hearing that high end come through. And it had enough low end for me, too. This is a great bass for modding, too. An aftermarket P/J set with a 3-way switch seems to be popular. There are some good discussions about it on da interwebs, like this one: http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=75044 |
