Wonder how much this will end up going for?, a rare bass, the colour is shockingly bad though.

What, shoreline gold? I love that color! However, the gold touch-up paint isn't the same (and is downright ugly), and in my opinion, the shoreline gold & daphne blue don't look like they were done by Fender.

I'd strip it down to natural if I had it.

I'm still on vacation, and am using my phone as a modem, so I was never able to see all of the pictures... it was taking too long to download. Tried to count all of the pictures and photobucket links, and gave up somewhere around eighty-four. This guy must have put up a hundred pictures! He's certainly thorough.... :D

88 pix to be exact. Oddly enough, they loaded up in seconds on my old Powerbook G4. Maybe Comcast got word I'm jumping ship in favor of FIOS next week and threw me a few extra mbps. ;)

Question regarding the finish: should we assume this was an aftermarket job? It's my understanding Fender would often just spray over pre-existing finished bodies when making up custom orders, but it seems odd that there'd be a daphne blue finish under it before hitting the sunburst.

Judging from how the interior of the neck pocket was painted, my money is on a sloppy aftermarket refin job. Also, is the date stamp on the neck atypical for Fender? I'm used to seeing stamped codes, not hand written.
And FWIW, you can contact Chris and buy the bass direct from him if you are interested in saving a few $$$. What I'd like to know is where the heck does 'his left handed technician' find all these lefties in So Cal???

Handwritten pencil date on the neck heel is consistent with the time period.

Wow, who's going to be the first here to play it? Do I have to fly down? :D

I know so little about Fender, but daphne, THEN sunburst does seem unusual. But I'm sure it happened. But the sunburst could be aftermarket. The shoreline certainly looks to be aftermarket.

It's still at a collector's price, but I'm wondering if how much it will go for.

I know Fender painted over sunburst bodies, but I believe they'd paint it the same way they painted it originally. If that's true, then the neck pocket would not be completely painted blue or gold. Also, the pickup and control cavities would have been painted. From the looks of it, someone taped over the pickups and potentiometers, and then painted it. Maybe Fender did it that way, but I don't believe it.

What are the chances the successful bidder can sand down the shoreline, then each layer, to get something that appears original? Then do a decent looking coat?

Sounds like a challenge. I've spent about 4 hours recently sanding a P body - I guess I've got some poly dust on the brain.

I'd strip it rather than sand it first.

I contacted the seller and asked about a partial trade and he said he'd rather sell it outright.I also made him aware of this thread and he said "you leftys are as chatty as a sewing circle"I had a good laugh with that one.He is right about that.

He's well aware of this and other lefty websites, I've sent him the links on a few occasions. But he doesn't seem to want to post to any of them, for whatever reason. I'm thinking he wants to drive as much biz to his eBay store as possible

This is why you sometimes should be careful talking about others listings. You just never know who it is and I personally would hate to piss off a board member ripping their gear.

Back to this 1960 P-Bass, I'd say it is not ridiculously priced, the seller knows the lefty equation: yes it is super rare but lefties ready to shell out that kind of money for a collector are equally rare. It keeps the price of a vintage lefty in check. He is not one of those 20k+ dreamers. If I had the dough, I would possibly go for it.
