Wow, I'd hit that $1200 BIN if I didn't already have the same thing (same neck, 74 body with P + MM p/u in bridge position - will be my only fretless after I sell my MM fretlesses). (I'd inquire about the neck damage/repair just to be sure) I'll bet that thing sounds amazing. I love getting modified 70s Fenders at "normal" prices. I'll bet this thing is a player. The fretless P tone with these necks is something to be heard. My 2 cents. |

Like I said, I already have a great FenderFrankenFretless.  Body was bought from Chris Becker in SF and the neck from Matt R. It's 74 alder body sounds as good as I've heard from a P.For this bass, I wonder what the neck damage was, and the repair. And pics of that. Could be such that the neck is as good as it was before. He's gotta be off about it being a Fender mod. But I'd overlook that myself. His intentions don't seem poor there. Whatever. I love it when my fretless has that punch and girth of the P bass. Is it underrated and/or overshadowed by the popularity of the Jaco tone? This bass has THE mod - the bridge pickup. You can just roll off the P p/u for more jaco-ness. If that neck had never been damaged, I'd be happy to scoop up another one. |

I agree with you on the fretless P-sound. I also have a FrankenFender with an old Squier body bought from Gravesbass, Bartolinis in it and a MIJ 62' Jazz neck. I put some nylon taperwound strings that I purposedly set with a higher action. You close your eyes and you hear an upright bass. It is fat and thumpy yet not muddy. I use it for jazz and bluegrass gigs since I can not afford a good upright bass. The Jaco tone is great for soloing but who the heck is called to play fretless solo gigs? |

Great looking bass! I don't think I've ever seen a factory-stock Fender lefty fretless maple/maple neck! I'm curious what the "damage" is. If it's minor this would be a good deal, especially if one could land it for under $1k. I too prefer the PJ fretless tone over the Jazz. I have a Squier P-bass Special that I modded to fretless but I have never been happy with it's tone. I bought a Warmoth fretless maple/maple neck (no markers) to replace the stock neck in the hope that that would perk it up (plus I found I prefer the board without fretlines). Gotta get around to that project someday. |

i have never played a fretless bass in my life but ilike this bass too i like the mirror pickgaurd it has that phil lynott vibe to it. |

Very cool looking parts bass. Might be worth it if it goes for the starting price or close to it. Personally, I wouldn't go over $1000 though. I bought this '78 fretless P one last year. Currently strung with tapewounds. It has fast become one of my favorite basses. Surprisingly mellow warm tone. No, it won't "mwah" like my other fretless basses, as a fretless P offers an entirely different sonic option in that it can approximate the thump of an upright. It's also my first unlined fretless, and I'm finding it's not as hard to play as I thought it would be. I played this bass below at Chicago Music Exchange about four years ago. It was light! I would say no more than 9 lb. It was in really good condition, almost no marks on the fretboard. Really nice. It needed a setup badly, and I thought the neck was really fat - well, most '70s P bass have fat necks. The price tag back then was $2400. I'm also a big fan of fretless P-basses. I use my defretted Yamaha RBX350 quite often. danomite64, i can't really tell if that's the bass, anyway it seem that now it's been sold. haha by the way i found out that they are selling a 78 jazz for 7500 $ .... nothing wrong with it but for that price i'll prefer a custom shop ... |
