It's real close to being reminiscent of the o.g. G+L headstock, which I like, but it's a bit too bulbous to hit the retro cool looks mark. I hear wonderful things about them too. |

I actually like that headstock with an Ebony board. I could use it to smak my bitch up when she is a bitchin'...ha, kidding.  Jimmy makes some really great basses and attention to detail. |

Does anyone feel the Alleva Coppolo basses do something better/different than it's peers? |

I have to say I'm not a fan of the 5-in-line headstock. I briefly bought an LM5 from The Low End but returned it within the trial period. The damn thing was more than 10 lb, but again, that's how that model is supposed to be (heavy northern ash - Jimmy offers all kinds of body woods). My impression otherwise was very positive. The sound was really the best 5-string Jazz-type I've heard. MTD, Lakland and Sadowsky are awesome, but the Alleva had a vintage character like no other. I assume those pickups are wound to vintage specs, and the preamp is very transparent and mellow. The neck was maple finished in poly with 10" radius, so it had that '70s Fender feel to it (for a 5-string). I still prefer Lakland necks: I think they are easier to play. The body was thin poly, and very prone to scratches. . . it was peeling off and this was a recent bass. But again, this was by design. A good friend of mine has a made-to-specs RM5, and he swears by it. He quickly sold his Sadowsky when the Alleva arrived. I think that the bottom line is that if you are looking for boutique-made Fender-type bass and don't want to deal with Fender Custom Shop, Alleva should be your first choice. Other reasons to go with them: they make their own preamps and pickups, they offer nitro finishes, and their customer service is great. I think I wrote this whole review at another thread some time ago. Heck, I like to write. |
