Yes, I've seen it too. There's one for sale over here at half that. And you even get all 5 strings, what a steal!

I'm no Alembic expert but that is not an Epic it's actually an Essence which does list for $900 more than an Epic. Not that I know what these guys go for but I thought too high as well but I like it much more than the Epic..

But a few weeks ago I heard a guy playing an Epic through a small Markbass combo at a Guitar Center in King of Prussia outside Philly and I was blown away by the tone. Was big, full. round and full with lots af ass and glass. I was really suprised by the tone and the guy trying to trade it in said the strings were old too

Description - "Perfect Condition: Alembic Bass SN:95K9333 Left Handed (1995) "

If it's missing a string, I would say it's safe to say "it's not perfect condition!"

some people have no clue....

I guess I'm not getting it...yes over priced but what's with the string thing. I have like 15 brand new sets of strings lying around and countless singles like who freaking cares about a string? If they are all off and the tension is wrong or unbalanced for a long spell I understand the concern but when buying a Mercedes if a windshield wiper blade is missing would it deter you from buying it if that's what you want and you’re not a "tire kicker looking for something to say" and would never or just couldn't buy the Mercedes? It’s a non point. Yeh it's odd but worth more than a nod I don't think so.

First thing I do when I buy and instrument is rip the strings off in the first 7 minutes of taking it out of the case. I’m not trying to start something I just don’t understand it being an issue. Not that I would try to sell a bass anywhere without a full set on but like who cares really they are disposable right??? Batteries and strings are the toilet paper of basses aren’t they? :?

You never know with opening bids so early. Could be one of his buddies shill bidding to get it going..

Well, not only the first time there was a $4000 bid within the first 30 minutes of the listing being started, but now it's relisted at $5K with $6.5K But It Now.

Clueless, whether he thinks it's worth that much, or whether it's some kind of scam.

What? It means the reserve wasn't met at $4K???? Is it from the same seller?

an Ebay laugh a day helps keep the pain away......
and ya he probably took the 4k, and refunded it because he thinks he can get a grand more....

I've had people do that to me, they list it for too cheap and somebody tells them they got ripped off so they refund you and relist it for more. Nothing you can say or do about it. The joke is he says I used it 10 times and put it away...how's he know that? does he have a counter on his input jack?

and missing a string = total bullshit !!!

p.s. when you pay for something on paypal and even 5 minutes later it gets refunded it takes 4-5 fricken days to get the money back into the paypal account.

I'm totally not bothered by the lack of string... but I am concerned about what 15 years of improper tension on the neck might have done to the bass.

Anyway... Since I'm on a hardcore hunt for a quality 5'er right now, I thought I'd shoot this person a message to get more information, and inquire about the controversial asking price... here's what has gone down so far...

Me:
Quote:
Hi... I'm interested in your bass, but it's priced REALLY high. I did a Google search for "used Alembic Essence" and the price ranges that came up were anywhere from $1500-$2000. Here's an example: http://alembic.com/cgi-bin/alembic-club ... page=27418

It's your bass, so you can obviously sell it for whatever you want... but, I thought I'd pass this information on to you in case you weren't aware of what it was you were selling.

If your price was more in that range, I'd definitely be willing to talk to you about purchasing it.

Him/Her:
Quote:
I ordered this custom and used it only a few times then kept it
stored properly for the past 15 years. If you were to order a new
one it would cost you the below amount. It's very custom and I
believe it's priced well. Thank you so much for taking an interest
and providing the info you did, it's greatly appreciated.
NECK FEATURES
5 string 7200.00
Left-handed 0.00
Long scale 34 inches 0.00
Maple neck w/walnut pinstripes 0.00
Ebony fingerboard 0.00

Comfort fingerboard taper (wide bridge) 0.00
Mother of pearl ovals 200.00
No front LEDs 0.00

No peghead bevel 0.00
BODY FEATURES
Quilted maple 5A top 1200.00
Bookmatched top 0.00
Walnut body 400.00
Quilted maple 5A back 1500.00
Polyester clear gloss finish 0.00

Tummy and elbow contour 200.00
HARDWARE FEATURES
Gold plated logo and script 150.00
Bridge block 0.00
Half moon tailpiece 0.00
Continuous wood truss rod cover 300.00
Continuous wood backplate (for model electronics) 800.00
Gold plated hardware (estimated) 1000.00
Gold Alembic Gotoh machine heads 0.00
Gold strap locks 0.00
ELECTRONICS FEATURES
Essence electronics 0.00
Total Price

Essence Quotation $12,950.00

Me:
Quote:
Hello again!

I appreciate the time you took to put that list together, but the bass you're selling does NOT have these features that you gave me:

Mother of pearl ovals 200.00
Walnut body 400.00
Quilted maple 5A back 1500.00
Continuous wood truss rod cover 300.00
Continuous wood backplate (for model electronics) 800.00
Gold plated logo and script 150.00

That would bring the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) you gave me down to $9600.

Most dealers discount about 30-35% from MSRP... that means I could buy the exact bass you have listed brand new with a full warranty from an Alembic dealer for about $6500.

Your bass is 15 years old... it's missing a string and might need some extensive setup work if it's been sitting around without being played for that amount of time.

When all is said and done, I would value it at about $3000. I've worked in the music industry in retail, manufacturing, and as a player for 20 years... so, I'm not some guy who's just trying to rip you off. I'm honestly trying to help.

BUT... like I said... it's your bass. You can try to sell it for whatever you want.

However, if you do really want to sell it and you need the money, you should consider selling it for what it is worth... especially in today's economy.

Anyway... good luck!

I'll update you guys if I get a response.

At this point I'm thinking that the seller either aquired this bass under false pretenses, is completely clueless and doesn't know what he/she has, or is a total scam artist.

It's too bad... because it is a cool bass. It's be nice to see it in the hands of a lefty who truly appreciates it.

well Addison, at least that person was civil in the reply and not a dick like most people are when I "suggest" they are pricing a Jackson wrong, or their ebay ad is all wrong ( wrong model/wrong specs..etc ).....lol
most of the time I get a quick reply like "mind your own business", or "MY friend who has worked at GuitarCenter knows everything about Jacksons and you don't so your blocked" bullshit :)

Yeah, I was going to bring a couple of other ones up as well, but I wasn't 100% on them.

I could see the "tummy contour" but the "elbow contour" is still in question.

It's also kind of hard to tell whether it's polished brass or it is the gold-plated hardware since the pics are so shitty... so I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.

That does look like a 5A maple top to me as well... that figuring is insane... so I think that one might be right.
