Agreed. Numbskulls. And the only reason they do it is because they think it looks cool playing an upside down bass. It doesn't, unless you're Hendrix.

The other being us lefty having the Ford T syndrome: you can choose any color as long as it is black (though in all fairness this has changed a bit in the past years. But for my generation "18 in the 80s" this was certainly the case)...

Back in the 80s I didn't mind that part at all. Black, especially Precisions like this one, was the color that I associated with the British New Wave bassists I wanted to emulate.
