It really is comical/annoying how shitty Fender's QC was back then. I've seen so many inexcusable instruments from that mid-late 70s era. I have a '77 T bass with a neck pocket you could drive a mack truck through. But, since this bass is 45 years old, so let's charge $5000 for it anyway.
The only solution I've considered for my misaligned neck and this one without re-drilling/re-positioning the bridge would be to replace the bridge with one that has string spacing saddle adjustment capabilities. (Hipshot KickAss bridge?). Of course, if you installed that, the strings would no longer sit directly between each of the double poles of a J PUP, though I'm not sure that would affect your sound in any way.
Or, for $5000, you could buy 3 Am Pro J basses that are infinitely better made than this.
