I have five very nice basses, but I always go to the SB-2 first (also have an SB-1, L2k, Kiloton, and a Warwick Thumb). The SB-2 with TI flats is juuuuuust about perfect. |

I've been considering a nice G&L P style bass for a while now. Other than the inclusion of the J PUP, how does the SB-2's P PUP compare tonally to an LB100? |

I think the main thing to check w/re to SB-1 vs SB-2 vs LB-100 is the pickup position. My SB-2 split-coil is closer to the bridge than my SB-1 split-coil. I'm not sure of the LB-100 pup position, but I think I've heard that it has moved over the years. Pickup position aside, it's hard to describe the difference tonally. If you've tried good alnico pickups then you have a good idea of what the LB-100 pup sounds like. But the MFDs are a different animal. What I love about them is how they respond to the dynamics of my playing, rather than their inherent tone. But for tone, I guess most would agree that they have a hotter signal overall, with more upper-mids. My very subjective impression is that I like having the upper mid bump without an overly bright top end. The last good P/J set I used before my SB-2 were EMG Geezers. I found them very trebly, and couldn't EQ the brightness away without killing the upper mids. There was no satisfying grindy/punchy setting between too-bright and wet-blanket. You could always do what I did, which is buy a G&L MFD split-coil from the G&L store, and install it in any old P-bass. Then try out a few different kinds of strings. I've found that MFDs of any type love TI jazz, Chromes, and Fender SS for flats; and nickel and SS Lo-Riders for rounds. |
