I actually don't think that I will bother. If I knew there was a decent wood grain underneath, I might go for a burst finish of some kind. For solid colors, a dark green would go well with the yellowed neck. A dark red might be even better (the flame of the neck would really pop!). But the ivory is a nice neutral color that fits any context, and I don't think I want to disassemble it and have it out of commission for a month, at least not yet. Besides, this bass has some serious, natural, hard-earned mojo. (In the form of three decades of cigarette smoke deposits and traces of bar fight!)

BTW, as for weight, according to my super accurate holding-while-standing-on-the-bathroom-scale method, it appears to be 9.5# or so.

Tim, your story is so eerily similar to mine I feel I have to mention it.

My '73 P bass came from the same neck of the woods (Scio, OR), has almost the same exact color configuration (even the same yellowing white), and smells like your chain-smoking grandfather's favorite chair (much of the yellowing is from tobacco smoke).

And the seller had no experience with online sales. I ended up wiring the money.

His name wasn't "Jack" was it? (I doubt it because Jack never cursed).

Anyway, congrats on the score.

Geoff

That's funny. But I don't think it's the same guy. If my guy had been through all of this before, it wouldn't have been such clown shoes this time around.

At one point I wondered if he was giving me an assumed name (it's both the stage name of an obscure but historic rock/blues guitarist and a wretched children's television character) ((a riddle, anyone?)), but it's the name I used for the bank wire. Not "Jack" :)

I played the bass through my Ashdown Little Bastard and Audiokinesis cab for three hours last night, and again for an hour today, and I am just so frikking thrilled with the tones I can get.
