This is just a heads up attached with a question out of naïve curiosity.

In case any of us are looking for what must be (I wouldn't know) fine f'n Fodera.....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fodera-LEFTY-Ne ... 3f2bdf31d7

Would one of you more informed Fodera fans chime in on what could be expected tonewise or otherwise from this instrument.

No, I'm not a potential buyer I'm simply curious as to what compels a bassist to plunk down this kinda moola for an electric bass???

I don't think this would be considered an investment type bass in the same way a vintage Fender might.

The short answer: I think that people like Fodera because of craftsmanship, looks, sound and playability, but also because the brand pedigree and because they want that "Fodera sound."

The long answer:

I owned a Monarch Deluxe shortly a few years ago and regret selling it everyday. I can't even remember why I sold it (probably gassing for something else. . . ). I've owned more than 120 basses in the past 15 years and I can say that Fodera is in the Top 5. The quality of woods and craftsmanship were second to none. The tone was very rich, multidimensional, with a lot of elements, piano-like, punchy. The bass I had had a Fodera preamp and Bartolini P/J - it sounded really close to a Victor Wooten bass but warmer. I paid $3000 for it and it was well used with plenty of nicks and dents. That bass today would cost around $9K, I believe (it was a deluxe with the dovetail neck joint, quilted top, ebony board, abalone blocks).

They are in many ways the ultimate bass in terms of beauty, quality, playability and sound. Although, I think that you can get the same quality, sound richness and playability from many other builders for about half the price of a Fodera, such as Smith, MTD, US Spector, Roscoe. (I don't mention Sadowsky because they are more of the ultimate Fender-type, which Fodera is far from.)

With Fodera you definitely are paying for the brand name because it's obvious that other established manufacturers can manage to sell bass as rich and luxurious as a Fodera for a fraction of the price.

Cons;

-Fodera usually have that compressed, dense sound that can be seen as the opposite of a vintage sound, so if you are a Fender purist, a Fodera might be useless to you.
-Average Fodera 5-strings are heavy. At Fodera they have a motto that is that "sound trumps weight," so their preferred sound formula and wood choice usually yields 10+ lb basses. Not for me, at any price. I'm guessing you can custom-order one with light woods, but I've never seen a stock 5-string Fodera anywhere that is under 9 lbs. Four-strings, although, general can be light. The one I had was 8.5 lb.
-Fodera usually don't do an arm cut on the body, which I find very uncomfortable. I'm used to those body-hugging Fender contours. But again, I'm guessing you can get that on a custom.

Fodera do hold their value pretty well, I'd say as much as vintage Fender in some cases, but I don't know about long, long term. It's not crazy to think that when Fodera founders pass on, the prices will go through the roof. But that's many years ahead. $7000 for that bass in question is not ridiculous, but not a deal either - that's a $9150 + option + 15% lefty upcharge, so I'd say about $11K. I woulnd't pay $100 for that particular bass because of the weight, but if given to me I'd gladly play it at home, or sitting down at gigs when I'm older. ;-)

For a $7000 bass maybe they could personalize the ad a little better?

"international purchase is no problem and can be shipped with neck off body for $100 usps postal, if neck is removable."

Lefty 007, now I'm curious...what are the others in the top 5?

It's hard to pick just 5, but if I can group a few together it would be:

1. My '82 Jazz and '73 P-Bass. For vintage Fender tone these are as good as it gets. Haven't heard any other basses that have such magical tone.

2. Sadowsky. I've had 5 of them, currently have two. The green P/J I just bought from a fellow forum member is really outstanding in playability and tone. The 5-24 I was selling recently is incredible too (I wanted to sell it to fund getting something with a narrower neck).

3. MTD 535.

4. Spector /Fodera. I've never owned a Spector but have recorded fellow bass players with Spector and I think the sound fantastic. The Fodera I had had a similar vibe.

5. Lakland 55-94. Can't go wrong with these. I let mine go because the 35" scale and full spacing was too much for my hands, but tone for days, no matter the pickup selection.

KOA, have you ever been to TheLowEnd before? They used to have a booth at NAMM until recently (don't think they were there the last couple of years). IMO, some of the guys who worked there were real straight-up fellers. Others ... well, not so much ...

I'd be interested in finding out if they still have that gawd-awfull looking orange bass that chew from the North Mississippi All-Stars dropped off there a few years ago.

an OMG you're not kidding +1 !

I was messing around with a Redwood top/Hog(IIRC) core fretless 5 of their's and it was at least 12 lbs, and probably closer to 14. Tone for days!! Visits to chiropractor were not included in the price.

Yup, they have it... and they refinished it black.

If the headstock didn't look like one of Fred Flinstone's feet, I'd probably be gassing on it.

Once. I went to take a look at that preamp/DI that got some buzz like 5 years ago. IIRC, they did not have any in the store for me to look at.

There was only one dude there and I assumed it was the main guy (can't remember name).

Oh, there was an old restored classic car of some sort parked in the middle of the show room.

I don't recall seeing any lefties either.

Still haven't made it to Murfreesboro but I did drop in on a local pawn shop (a high end one known for select goods) to check out stuff. Anyway, up on the wall was hanging a crazy intricate looking bass (next to a Bluesman Vintage tele bass) and I was just kinda staring at it trying to figure out what the h$ll it was and the salesguy says, "it's a Fodera!".

I say "oh".

He says (and remember I'm in a pawn shop, albeit high end) Eeeeeleevinnnnnn THOUUUUUSSSSSAAAAAANNNNDddddd Fiiiiiiiiveeeee huuuundddrrreeeddddddddddddd Dolllllllllllllllllllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrssssss.

that's $11,500.00

used.

I do think it had an extra string. :D
