Holy effin' cow & savior with a middle name starting with 'H' who is proficient at vaudeville dancing & who rides a two wheeled conveyance, you actually sold it???? If I had a lazy 2 G's & no wife to answer to, I'd be all over that like baby shite on a blanket. What was it like, I need to live vicariously thru your Pedulla experience, kinda like a vampire, or leech, whatever suits.

So you want my take on the Pedulla...Well absolutely stunning to see in person just beautiful to behold. Something really different about them and I love the shape but I always have liked shapes and tones a little left of center.

The bass I remember was super solid and felt whole and resonant. The neck is the type that is just super thin and effortless to play for most I’m sure. I have hands though that are bigger than average but it’s all in my palms. So I have big palms and sausage fingers so I have never really felt comfortable with 19 mm spacing and a thinner wide neck. My Mike Lull 5 string had a similar killer neck like the Pedulla but the Warwick necks have always suited me so much better. I like the 17 to 18.3 mm basses like all my Warwicks and Spectors. Another thing about necks I think there is a fine line between too thick or too thin. I have come to the conclusion that more tone comes from the neck and fingerboard woods than body woods in any bolt on and neck through is more even but still more from the neck to me. The tone is killer from the awesome Bartolini set up but when the neck is that thin the balance shifts to my ears where I think it’s as much pickups and electronics as the acoustic property of the bass. This one has the soap bars so the normal or more popular is the PJ configuration isn’t quite as hot or aggressive. I personally prefer the soaps for tone and it’s just more comfortable to play resting your thumb on a big pickup rather than a little guy. I also find myself shifting my left hand in different spots for different tones with fretless basses in general. So the soaps all around to my ear and hands I like better. Some people say there is a huge difference in tone and I have heard it side by side with other Pedullas and if you have both pickups on 50/50 there is almost no audible difference in tone it’s just the soaps are hotter. The PJ when you change from front or bridge then you can really hear a difference but I almost 99% play all basses even front and back.

Ok now the ever famous coated neck Pentabuzz thing. This is just my thing but when I think of my most favorite classic fretless mwaaahh killer tones I like to hear round wounds buzzing against raw wood. That’s just my personal preference one is not better than the other but that’s what blows my skirt up. The coating gives a super responsive tone and you can hear the round wound buzzing against the fingerboard actually even more so but the tone you get from the fingerboard to me although deep and fat and also full of bright highs it doesn’t sound like wood. It has an almost synth type of thing going on like you have an effect on or something. I love Mark Egan and I love his tone but it is definitely not a normal warm organic woodsy tone. So for my personal tastes my G&L sounds more like what a fretless should sound and feel like.

Ok so for overall although this wasn’t the best choice for me due to my hands and my preference of a more traditional woodsy tone. This is an incredibly well made instrument. Would stand up next to any of today’s most well respected and top builders. Mike Pedulla is among the very best of the best. The bass is balanced and just full of huge fat tone. Super solid and feels like you are playing air it’s so comfortable. Balances and distributes the weight of a solid maple NT body perfectly (must be 9.5 LB) this although not a traditional shape is well known all over the world. This is a collector piece and although not mine I still and I admit gassing for it again. Easy to play and intonate and the coating on the fingerboard is in excellent shape and will last a long time. Well worth the investment is you are looking for a 5 string fretless.
