I stopped by Guitar Showcase in San Jose last night. I saw a few used lefties that you folks may be interested in

- G&L L1500 Maple Neck great condition for $695
- Am Std P-Bass 60th anniversary (they just got it the day before) - great condition - $849
- Modulus Graphite 5 strings (don't know the model) - It was signed by Steve Miller (who has been selling a huge collection of instruments there) - I believe it was around $1,700.

I just stopped by Guitar Showcase and saw a giant truck out back unloading all Steve Miller's road gear. Man, that was a the 3rd load from the road guys. SOOO much gear. The bassist was a righty as he had a 6 string Modulus in a road case. This one came off the truck and I opened the case. I do remember Steve having a black lefty bassist and the bass inside Showcase was a left handed 5 string. It was on the floor. The asking price tag was $2500. not $1700. I played it. It was ok but an older one (90's early 00) and had the older EMG DC 40's and 3 knob configuration. The body was lighter and neck dove a bit. There also was some finish checking (light cracks) probably from the road. One o ther guys there did mention maybe they should lower the price $500ish. Even at that price I thought it was high. It was on consignment there. Blue Quilt to Black top, Black back and graphite neck. The nut was about 2" (pretty wide) and string spacing on that guy was like 17.0-17.5. It was tight.

Just my 10 min evaluation... I was more interested in seeing the vintage amps and guitars Steve had for sale but didn't stay long enough.

Nope! It wasn't me, I really liked it although I thought it would duplicate the Stingray.
Regarding Steve Miller's bass player, I think one of his first bass players was a lefty (another local left bassist?). Once, someone was selling a lefty P-Bass on E-bay mentioning it was the one that recorded on "The Joker"...possible...does anyone from the board know?
Also, part of this huge Steve Miller collection sold at guitar showcase last year, there was a lefty Ovation Magnum (!!!) initially on sale for $1000 and since none was interested (didn't you guys see this one?) they eventually dropped it to $695. I tried it, it was outstanding but I was kind of broke last year with the economy bull...
I tried the Modulus, I thought it totally sucked. The EMG electronic was noisy as hell (maybe the batteries were dead?). Then again I am not so objective because I am a 4 string player with some traditional tastes.

You are correct sir. One of Steve's bassist is some local guy and he is lefty... A monster player at that. There were 3 HUGE truckloads of gear coming in when I was there.... Not sure there is enough room upstairs to store it all tho. I go up there all the time. On the Modulus, I didn't have time to plug her in (might go back and try it soon if still there) but checked the finish, neck, etc. The strings were dead as hell. Neck felt ok but had an under bow in the center. I hope that graphite neck had the truss rod because if not, its done. It appeared to me to be an older Modulus. The layout of the controls, older style tuners, EMG pups and bridge is 90's style. There were also finish cracks probably from the road and weather conditions. $2500.. 2,000.00, etc.... I think it was overpriced and will mention to Dan there. He is the buyer there.

The G&L was worth $695 tho. It felt solid, heavy and actually played well even with dead strings. They are well built basses for the $$.

:o I can't say I've ever seen a lefty Magnum, let alone knew there were any lefties out there. Now we know there's at least one. So where is this one now so I can hunt down the owner and make him an offer he can't refuse.

Yes it was heavy as hell and strung with the E down but it was a lefty indeed. It sounded fantastic with the flat-wounds, somewhat reminiscent of "Paul Jackson with the headhunters" sound. It has this funky look. The guy who bought for $695 got quite a deal! If anyone stumbles onto this one it easy to recognize it Steve Miller signed it on the headstock. I am surprised that Gravebass did not snatch this one.

I didn't see it when I was there. There were only 3 lefty's (G&L L 1500, Fender Mexican Jazz and Modulus 5er) but also not snatching basses like I used to. Money is minimum these days and GAS has slowed down. Sold all my collectables too. I just want what I will play and pretty much got that covered. I do still like to look and play tho. :D

I stopped by earlier, the Modulus is still there. I was also told that they have some room to negiciate on all this Steve Miller gear. If anyone is interested in the Modulus you should make an offer. My guess is that low ballers are welcome on this one. For those away from the Bay Area you can trust this shop they are very reputable. The owner is (supposedly) one of the largest vintage guitar collector in the world (nothing less!). Most of his collection is for speculation only and stored in warehouses. He once had on display a lefty 1964 Hofner 500. I asked him how much he would ask for it. His answer: "I'll consider an offer for 4K" In other words, he does not give a damn about selling his gear at the moment. If you ever look for an elusive lefty pre-CBS strat or a 1959 Les Paul, this guy has it all, just bring beaucoup $$$$$$$$.

I did not see the P-Bass but when I went 2 weeks ago, it was not on display yet, the owner went in the back of the store and showed it to me.
