I kept flirting with the idea, but everytime I got ready to put a number in, the price went up again. Once it went past $650 I decided to just sit back and enjoy the show.

I can understand why it went the way it did. Yes it is a calculated risk, but as I said before truss rod repairs and general cleaning up won't cost too much and the new owner will have a hand built classic British bass (and quite possibly a custom build) for around $1500. The energy of the bidding towards the end suggests to me that it probably is a one-off build - a little tired looking, but still worth having because you can get it cleaned up properly for less than you might think. When my truss rod broke I got an invisible repair job and a full setup from the man who made it with change from £150 (think $200)

It would make sense if the buyer lived in the UK or Europe, but I think it was a US-only auction?

And no, I didn't bid.
