Found this press release today for a Variax/Roland VB99 type of product BUT utilizing analog modeling and no ugly pickup to mount on the face of your bass. They also make Stratocaster modeling systems, but those come with pickguards and are specifically righty. The Jazz bass modeler is a simple drop in control plate to replace your existing one, and by the looks of things would work for lefties as well. The tweaking and modifying options are probably much more limited than either of the two aforementioned products, but for sheer simplicity with no drilling or routing required to your prized J, this is very cool:

No soundbites on their site yet for the bass model, but check out the samples for the Strat model. Fairly convincing Tele sounds, IMO.
